60 Minutes: Facebook Whistleblower Francis Haugen
Speech is silver, silence is golden" is a proverb extolling the value of silence over speech. Its modern form most likely originated in Arabic culture, where it was used as early as the 9th century.
The virtue of speaking well, rightly and effectively also includes the capacity to stay silent, when the situation demands so. Besides earning respect and acceptance, needless problems can be obviated because one is a slave of the words he utters while being a master of those he chooses not to speak.
*The proverb is not originated from Thomas Carlyle, but from the East.
*Francis Haugen's words could be more than golden.

속담은 어떤경우에나 다 맞아 떨어지는 것은 아니다. 어떤 경우에는
그럴듯하지만 또 다른 경우에는 그렇지 않은 것이 속담의 모순이다.
왜냐면 사람들은 속담이 마치 절대 불명의 진리처럼 생각하고 무게를
두기 때문이다.
입을 가볍게 놀리는 것은 미덕이 아니다. 말을 잘 생각한 후에 아껴서
해야 한다는 것은 상식이다. 이런 것들은 평상시의 이야기 이다.
위 호건 페이스북 전직원이나 임은정 검사의 경우는 좀 다르다. 말하자면
불의를 보고 침묵을 지키지 않고 용기를 내어 폭로 한 사람들이다.
"Speech is silver, Silence is golden"이라는 말이 유행 했던 시절에는 아마
정의보다는 불의가 사회전반에 깔려 있는 분위기 였을 것으로 짐작 된다.
말하자면 말해 봤자 본전도 못 찾았던 시절이 었다. 그렇지만 위험을 무룹쓰고
불의를 고발 했던 사람들 때문에 세상은 점점 좋아지고 있지 않을 까?
침묵은 개인에게는 "금"일지 모르지만 사회에게는 "독"이다.
