POET: Edgar Alan Poe


Poe’s work as an editor, a poet, and a critic had a profound impact on American and international literature. His stories mark him as one of the originators of both horror and detective fiction.

Many anthologies credit him as the “architect” of the modern short story. He was also one of the first critics to focus primarily on the effect of style
and structure in a literary work; as such, he has been seen as a forerunner o the “art for art’s sake” movement. French Symbolists such as Mallarme and Rimbaud claimed him as a literary precursor.

Baudelaire spent nearly fourteen years translating Poe into French. Today, Poe is remembered as one of the first American writers to become a major figure in world literature.


작자 에드거 앨런 포

미국 보스턴에서 태어났다. 1831년부터 4년 동안 숙모 클렘 모녀와 함께 볼티모어에서 가난한 생활을 하다 단편소설 현상 공모에 당선되었다. ‘병 속의 수기’(1833)로 인정받아 문예 잡지의 편집자가 되었으나 엄격한 서평 때문에 반감을 사고 물러났다.

1836년 열세 살밖에 안 된 사촌 동생 버지니아와 결혼한 후 리치먼드, 필라델피아 등지에서 잡지의 편집자로 일하였으나 이 또한 얼마 가지 못하였다.

왕성한 창작 활동은 이때부터 시작되었는데, ‘리지아’(1838), ‘윌리엄 윌슨’(1839), ‘어셔가의 몰락’(1839)을 비롯해 최초의 단편집 [그로테스크하고 아라베스크한 이야기](2권, 1840)를 출판해 작품 속에서 공포, 우울, 불쾌 등의 특이한 정서를 표현했다.

암울한 아름다움이라는 에드거 앨런 포 특유의 감성은 소설뿐 아니라 시에서도 나타난다. ‘헬렌에게’부터 ‘애너벨 리’에 이르기까지 죽음, 미, 우수를 주제로 한 음악적 순수시를  쓴 그는 단편소설의 개척자일 뿐 아니라 미국 낭만주의 문학을 대표하는 시인이다. 빈곤, 주벽, 정신착란, 주위의 반감 속에서 짧은 생애를 보냈으나 그가 근대 문학에 끼친 영향과 공적은 지금까지도 이어지고 있다.
