Arts Dale Chihuly's Glass Art and Installations

                    I want my work to look like it just happened, as if it was made by nature. - Dale Chihuly - Dale Chihuly is most frequently lauded for revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement by expanding its original premise of the solitary artist working in a studio environment to encompass the notion of collaborative teams and a division of labor within the creative process. However, Chihuly's contribution extends well beyond the boundaries both of this movement and even the field of glass: his achievements have influenced contemporary art in general.Chihuly’s practice of using teams has led to the development of complex, multipart sculptures of dramatic beauty that place him in the leadership role of moving blown glass out of the confines of the small, precious object and into the realm of large-scale contemporary sculpture.In fact, Chihuly deserves credit for establishing the blown glass form as an accepted vehicle for installation and environmental art beginning in the late twentieth century and continuing today. A prodigiously prolific artist whose work balances content with an investigation of the material's properties of translucency and transparency, Chihuly began working with glass at a time when reverence for the medium and for technique was paramount. A student of interior design and architecture in the early 1960s, by 1965 he had become captivated by the process of glassblowing. He enrolled in the University of Wisconsin's hot glass program, the first of its kind in the United States, established by Studio Glass movement founder Harvey K. Littleton. After receiving a degree in sculpture, Chihuly was admitted to the ceramics program at the Rhode Island School of Design, only to establish its renowned glass program, turning out a generation of recognized artists. Dale Chihuly는 워싱턴 주립대학에서 건축 인테리어 디자인 연구과정과 위스콘선 주립대와 로드 아일랜드 스쿨 오브 디자인에서 조각 전공으로 석사학위를 받았다. 대부분의 조각가가 소재를 돌이나 브론즈 혹은 나무를 사용하고 있으나, 그는 유리를 소재로 한 독특한 예술의 세계를 이룩한 유리 예술의 거장이다. 1968년 풀 브라이트 장학재단의 후원으로 미국인으로서는 처음으로 유리 예술의 전통을 자랑하는 베네치아 무라노 섬에 있는 베니-니 공방에서 베네치아 장인들이 천년을 지켜온 유리공예의 비법과 "Team Play"라는 그들의 작업방식을 터득하게 된다. 미국으로 귀국한 후 그의 예술혼은 유리와 더불어 창작 세계를 지향하게 되는게 그의 작업은 무엇보다 "Team Work"에 의한 것이며 이것은 나아가 그의 작업의 특징을 규정짓는 가장 핵심적인 요소가 된다. 그의 작품적인 특징은 크게 두가지로 구분되는데 하나는 액체상태의 유리에서 얻어지는 회회적인 성격과 자유로운 조형영역을 탐닉하게 되는데 여기에서 그의 창조적인 상상력은 "유리예술" 그 자체를 우리에게 말해준다. 두번째는 세계 수많은 장소에서 행해진 거대한 건축적 설치작업이다. 그 규모와 화려함은 그의 예술적 영역을 무한히 확장시킨다. 이와같이 다양하고 독특한 그의 작품들은 세계각처의 수많은 미술관과 공공 장소에서 전시, 소장되어져 있다. - 미국의 인간문화재 1호로 미국정부가 인정한 Glass Art의 대가, Dale Chihuly 의 환상적인 Environmental Installation 들과 유리공예 작품들입니다. |
