第一. 如是我聞。
一時，佛，在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園，與大比丘眾千二百五十人，俱。
爾時，世尊，食時，著衣持缽，入舍衛大城，乞食。
於其城中，次第乞已，還至本處。
飯食訖，收衣缽，洗足已，敷座而坐。

제1장 법회인유분 - 법회가 열리게 된 인연
나는 이렇게 들었다.
한때, 부처님께서 사위국 기수급 고독원에 천이백오십명의 비구와 함께 계셨다.
이때 세존께서 식사할 때가 되어 가사를 걸치고 발우를 들고는 사위대성에 들어가 밥을 빌었다.
차례로 돌며 밥을 빈 뒤 머무시는 곳에 돌아와 식사하시고
가사와 발우를 거두시고 발을 씻은 뒤 자리를 마련하여 앉으셨다.

THUS have I heard concerning our Lord Buddha:——
Upon a memorable occasion, the Lord Buddha sojourned in the kingdom of Shravasti, lodging in the grove of Jeta, a park within the imperial domain, which Jeta, the heir-apparent, bestowed upon Sutana, a benevolent Minister of State, renowned for his charities and benefactions.
With the Lord Buddha, there were assembled together twelve hundred and fifty mendicant disciples, all of whom had attained to eminent degrees of spiritual wisdom. As it approached the hour for the morning meal, Lord Buddha, Honoured of the Worlds, attired himself in a mendicant’s robe, and bearing an alms-bowl in his hands, walked towards the great city of Shravasti, which he entered to beg for food.
Within the city he proceeded from door to door, and received such donations as the good people severally bestowed. Concluding this religious exercise, the Lord Buddha returned to the grove of Jeta, and partook of the frugal meal received as alms.
Thereafter he divested himself of his mendicant’s robe, laid aside the venerated alms-bowl, bathed his sacred feet, and accepted the honoured seat reserved for him by his disciples.

第二. 時，長老須菩提，在大眾中，即從座起，
偏袒右肩，右膝著地，合掌恭敬，而白佛言：
「希有！世尊！如來善護念諸菩薩，善付囑諸菩薩。
世尊！善男子、善女人，發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心，
應云何住？云何降伏其心？」

제2장 선현기청분 - 선현 장로가 일어나 부처님께 청하다.
그 때 장로 수보리가 무리 속에 있다가 자리에서 일어나
오른 어깨를 드러내고 오른 무릎을 땅에 꿇고 손을 모아 공경하며 부처님께 여쭙기를,
“경이롭습니다. 세존이시여! 여래께서는 모든 보살을 좋게 여겨 보살피시고 모든 보살이 좋게 여겨 의지할 수 있게 합니다.
세존이시여,
가장 높고 바른 깨달음을 얻고자 하는 선한 남자와 선한 여인이 어떻게 살아야 하며 어떻게 그 마음을 다스려야 합니까?"

Upon that occasion, the venerable Subhuti occupied a place in the midst of the assembly.
Rising from his seat, with cloak arranged in such manner that his right shoulder was disclosed, Subhuti knelt upon his right knee, then pressing together the palms of his hands, he respectfully raised them towards Lord Buddha, saying:
“Thou art of transcendent wisdom, Honoured of the Worlds! With wonderful solicitude. Thou dost preserve in the faith, and instruct in the Law, this illustrious assembly of enlightened disciples.
Honoured of the Worlds! if a good disciple, whether man or woman, seeks to obtain supreme spiritual wisdom, what immutable Law shall sustain the mind of that disciple, and bring into subjection every inordinate desire?”

第三. 佛言：「善哉，善哉。須菩提！如汝所說：
如來，善護念諸菩薩，善付囑諸菩薩，汝今諦聽！當為汝說：
善男子、善女人，發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心，應如是住，如是降伏其心。」

제3장 대승정종분 - 가장 큰 수레가 가장 바른 가르침
부처님께서 대답하셨다. “훌륭하고 훌륭하다. 수보리여. 네 말처럼
여래는 모든 보살을 좋게 여겨 보살피고 모든 보살이 좋게 여겨 의지할 수 있게 한다. 이제 네가 청하니 마땅히 너를 위해 말하리라.
가장 높고 바른 깨달음을 얻고자 하는 선한 남자와 선한 여인은 이와 같이 살아야 하며 이와같이 그 마음을 다스려야 한다.”

The Lord Buddha replied to Subhuti, saying: “Truly a most excellent theme! As you affirmed,
I preserve in the faith, and instruct in the Law, this illustrious assembly of enlightened disciples. Attend diligently unto me, and I shall enunciate a Law whereby the mind of a good disciple,
whether man or woman, seeking to obtain supreme spiritual wisdom, shall be adequately sustained, and enabled to bring into subjection every inordinate desire.”

第四.「唯然。世尊！願樂欲聞。」
제4장 “예, 세존이시여! 기쁘게 듣고자 하옵니다.”
Subhuti was gratified, and signified glad consent.

第五. 佛告須菩提：
「諸菩薩摩訶薩，應如是降伏其心！
所有一切眾生之類：若卵生、若胎生、若濕生、若化生；
若有色、若無色；若有想、若無想、若非有想非無想，
我皆令入無餘涅槃，而滅度之。
如是滅度無量無數無邊眾生，實無眾生，得滅度者。
何以故？須菩提！
若菩薩有我相、人相、眾生相、壽者相，即非菩薩。」

제5장 부처님께서 수보리에게 말씀하셨다.
“모든 보살마하살은 마땅히 이렇게 그 마음을 다스려야 한다.
이른바 모든 종류의 중생, 알에서 태어나든, 태에서 나든, 습한 곳에서 생기든, 변화로서 생기든,
모습이 보이는 것이든, 보이지 않는 것이든, 생각을 지닌 것이든, 지니지 않는 것이든, 생각을 지니지도 않고 지니지 않는 것도 아닌 것이든,
이 모든 중생을 내가 무여열반에 불러들여 이들을 열반에 이르게 하리라 하고,
헤아릴 수 없이 많은 중생을 열반에 들게 하여도, 실은 완전한 열반을 얻은 중생이 아무도 없다.
어째서인가? 수보리여!
만일 보살이
자아(自我)가 있다는 관념, 개아(個我)가 있다는 관념, 중생(衆生)이 있다는 관념, 영혼(靈魂)이 있다는 관념을 지니면 이미 보살이 아니기 때문이다.”

Thereupon, the Lord Buddha, with majesty of person,and perfect articulation, proceeded to deliver the text of this Scripture, saying:——
“By this wisdom shall enlightened disciples be enabled to bring into subjection every inordinate desire!
Every species of life, whether hatched in the egg, formed in the womb, evolved from spawn, produced by metamorphosis,
with or without form or intelligence, possessing or devoid of natural instinct—from these changeful conditions of being, I command you to seek deliverance, in the transcendental concept of Nirvana. Thus, you shall be delivered from an immeasurable, innumerable, and illimitable world of sentient life;
but, in reality, there is no world of sentient life from which to seek deliverance. And why? Because, in the minds of enlightened disciples there have ceased to exist such arbitrary concepts of phenomena as an entity, a being, a living being, or a personality."

個我(개아): 개별적인 사람으로서의 자아(自我).

壽者相(수자상): 불교 사상(四相)의 하나. 오래 살고 싶어 하는 생각이나 태어날 때 일정한 목숨을 가지고 있다는 생각을 이른다.
認為“我的”壽命有一定限制，但死後靈魂不滅，進入輪回。於五蘊法中計我一期之壽命，成就而住，有分限也。

阿耨多羅三藐三菩提(아뇩다라삼먁삼보리): Supreme spiritual wisdom or highest perfect knowledge
