For the sake of national interest, Korean people have to forget the past history of
Korea-Japan and Korea-American relations. Korea should neither react to what Japan
did to Korea in the past nor to the indebtedness of America. Yes, Japan was an evil
nation. Yes, South Korea would have not existed without the U.S. But it does not mean
Korea has to treat Japan as an enemy or Korea should do whatever America asks her to do.
Korea must think thoroughly what is at stake.
Korea had foreign troops stationed in her soil since 1882. At first Chinese, soon Japanese
followed. After World War II, Americans came. They all say the same thing, “our troops
are here to protect Korea”. That is partly true. Sure, they will fight against any nation that invades
Korea only to protect their interest in Korea. In other words, if they lose the fight, other nation’s
troop will stay in Korea instead. This analogy worked in favor of Korean people because
American troops protect Korea from communists during the Cold War. It will not work in a world
where nationalism is rampant. Foreign troops will become an apparent occupying force instead
of the security forces. The world is becoming like the era of imperialism before World War II where
every nation tries to maximize its national interest. The stronger will exploit the weaker as far as
they can.

The white had regarded the yellow as the uncivilized. They called Asians “orientals”
who do not know the modern civilized culture. Then Americans came to Korea in 1945
and during the Korean war. They saw Korea and Korean people. What would they think of
Korea? This is the way white nationalist, Donald Trump treats Korean counterpart.
Where is nationalism in Korea? Whenever I see U.S. flag along with Korean in the
hands of street demonstrators with no reason, I am convinced that foreign dependency in Korean’s
mind is common sense. Foreign troops equal their survival.
