The city of Newport Beach reserved an area immediately west of the Newport Pier for Newport Dory Fisherman's Fleet. The Dory Fishing Fleet is a beachside fishing cooperative located in the city of Newport Beach, California. It was founded in 1891 at the base of what was then McFadden Wharf, now known as the Newport Pier. The Dory Fleet is a registered "historical landmark" and is the only one of its kind in the United States and is considered the last beachside cooperative of its kind in the United States.
 
The day's fresh catch is hauled onto shore every morning around 6:00 AM and gourmet restaurants, shops and private citizens arrive to purchase the bounty.
 
Newport Beach's Dory Fishing Fleet, has a long history and tradition. The Dory Fleet Market had its beginning in late 1891 when an enterprising fisherman tired of selling his fish to the wholesalers began marketing to the public on the beach.
 
These are the only commercial fishing boats that are lawfully permitted to cast off from the beach near Newport Pier, the numbers of these vessels and fishermen have dwindled from the early days when it was estimated that over 30 boats went out daily to catch fish that were sold in an open air market on the municipal beach in Newport Beach.
 
The market is open 7 days a week.(With the weather permitting). Each day the "Dory fishermen" launch their "dory boats" through the surf as early as 2 am. They return to shore around 5 to 7 am with the early morning's harvest. On weekends and holidays, customers will line up at the boats to purchase fish.

At $2.00/per pound for stone crabs, and $5/per pound for fish, the Dory fishermen also do offer, for free, cleaning your fish once you purchase it, and also fillet or anything you want them to. 
Nowadays, the market opens at 6:00AM and then lasts until about 7:30AM.

You buy the catch of the day (or as they say it, whatever the ocean gives to the Dory fisherman.) Depending on the seasons, they are Rock fish, Stone crab, Red Snapper, Anchovies, Sea bass, California Black cod, Lobster, California Sea trout.

Note: I am not sure if the blackcod, seatrout, or seas bass are the same fish or not.

Direction to the Newport Beach Fish Market:

We took I-405 toward Long Beach and then soon exited to Freeway-55-South. (LA이나 서북쪽에서 오는 사람들은 San Diego 방향의 I-405로 내려 오다가 Freeway-55를 만나게 된다.) Through Costa Mesa, within less than 10 miles, this freeway led us straight to the Pacific seashore where the pier is. After entering near the Balboa Island area of Newport Beach, we turned right at 21st Street and within a block, we found the parking space for the beach and pier. Just right of the pier entrance, there is the fish market with a nice wooden-arched entrance. Finding the market is really easy.

A Fish Market Trip at Newport Beach

5:10AM 깜깜한 새벽에, we left our villagege for the Pier 1 in Newport Beach in Southern California. 원래 늦잠자는 버릇이라, 물론 자기전에 Alarm clock을 setup했지...
The early-morning trip was for buying some fresh fish at the Fish Market.
My wife loves Blackcod (은대구) and she wanted to get fresh unfrozen ones. And I wanted take pictures of a fish market in action in the early morning.
Columbus, Ohio 에서 일하다가 Laguna Village, CA로 은퇴한 김윤성 동문 (서울의대 1969졸업)이 운전하고, our couple and his wife made the "fish-hunting" foursome.

None of us had ever been there. 김윤성 동문이 어느 한국 사람으로부터 얻은 정보에 의하면:
'6:00AM에 Pier One으로 가면, 한국사람들이 보일것인데 그들만 따라가면, 그날 밤 금방 잡아온 싱싱한 "은대구"를 살수있다'.
We didn't know how accurate the information was but we decided to adventure anyway.
김윤성 동문이, "정말 있을지 없을지 모르지만 한번 가보지요. 뭐..." 하면서 pre-emptive strike을 보낸다.
Anyway, there's really nothing to lose and I always love to take up something unknown or mysterious.

Despite the uncertainties, I was pretty well excited. My heart was beating fast in anticipation of the unknown or only-partially-known. In my life time, I have made a lot of challenging and lonely trips all over the planet earth, but, again, I felt similar excitement.
"Oh, come on, you retired old man, this is just a darn fish-shopping trip and, for God's sake, you are doing it with your wife !!"....  I had to say to myself to pour some cold water on the fire of the undeserving excitement.

우리의 driver, Dr. Y. Kim은 이미 머릿속에 가는길을 다 외어 놓은듯이 GPS 도 쓰지 않고, 주저없이 달려, 아주쉽게 Pier One을 찾었다. Parking meter에 quarter coins를 7-8개 넣으니 2 시간의 parking 시간을 비친다. 새벽에는 Metered Parking machine에 돈을 넣지 않아도 된다하지만, 좌우지간, California의 벌금은 엄청난 금액이라 무조건 quarter들을 넣었다. California에서는 벌금 않내고 하루를 보낸다면, 그것이 바로 돈 버는것이다. 몇년전에 모처럼 찾아온 조카부부와 함께 Laguna Beach를 산책하다가 시간을 잠간 초과해서 Parking 벌금을 문 생각도 났다.
깜깜한 길로 해변가를 향해서 반 block쯤 걸어가니, 사람들이 (주로 동양 사람들) 잔뜩 줄을서 있는게 보이고 Fish Market 간판도 보였다.
흠, 여기가 틀림 없구나. 이제 my wife 와 Mrs. Kim은 은대구만 발견하면 되고, 나는 사진만 몇장 찍으면 목표가 달성되는 셈이다.

하여간 긴줄이 있길래 그뒤에 섰다. 기다리면서 슬슬 조심스럽게 사진을 찍다보니, camera flash가 여기 저기에서 터진다. 그러고 보니 나만 사진찍는게 아니였다. 나와 비슷한 사진사들이 꽤있었다. 거기 사람들은 터지는 flash에 전혀 bother가 되는 표정이 아니였기에 마음을 놓았다. 세상의 모든 천재지변과 재앙이 일어나는 California이기에, 여기 사람들은 camera flash 정도에는 꿈쩍도 않하는구나 생각했다. 아무리 기다려도 줄이 꼼짝않고 전진을 않하는데, 옆으로 많은 사람들이 드나들기에, 의아한 나머지 앞사람에게 물어보니, "이줄은 게 (crab) 사는 줄인데 아직 게 가게가 열리지 않었다" 한다. 이런 "!!, 게사러 온것이 아닌데...".
촌놈짓 했음에 머슥한 기분으로 fish market 안으로 걸어 들어갔다. 곧곧에 Dory (조그만 목조 boat)가 있고 Dory위에 물고기들을 싸놓고 팔고있었다. 조금있으니 해변가로부터 pickup truck에 고기를 잔뜩 싫고와서 내린다. 어렵지 않게 은대구를 발견한다. 그것도 한군데만이 아니고 여러군데에서. 물어볼것도 없이, 시커먼 고기가 Black Cod (=은대구)임을 wife가 알아차린다.

거기서 만난 경험있는듯한 한국사람의 말에 의하면, Rock Fish와 Black Cod는 생선회로도 아주 좋다고 한다. 그러자 wife는 오늘 저녁 Riverside에서 모이는 나의 의대 동기생모임에서 Shashimi를 만들어 대접하기로 작정하고 두가지 고기를 6 pound 씩 샀다. 나도 이리저리 Camera setting을 바꾸며 부지런히 사진 찍었다.

돌아 오는길에 McDonald에 들려서 Egg McMuffin으로 아침을 때웠다.
아침 잠을 좀 미쪘지만, It was a wonderful fishing (?) trip. Our thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Y.S. Kim.

분명히 옛날 Dory men 들이 하던 장비와 모습을 상징하는것이리라.
Dory는 원래 작은 나무로 만든 rowing boat를 의미하지만 (윗 arch위에 보이는것 처럼), 여기 어부들은 이제는 fiberglass로 만든 작은 cabin을 갖추고  outboard motor 로 장비된 boat 를 사용한다.

Long Beach 와 San Pedro 는 Los Angeles의 공식 항구가 된다.



┗▶드디어 바다에서 돌아 온 어부가 살아있는 crab and lobster를 counter에 붇는다.
곧 사람들이 우루루 몰려가 질서정연하게 줄을선다.



┗▶한 Dory마다 한가게가 된다. 어부들이 자기네 Dory에 자기네의 수확을 가져와 판다.



┗▶아직 판매는 시작되지 않었는데 사람들이 줄을서서 기다린다. 고기들은 아직 살아서 꿈틀거리고...

이쯤에서 먼 동남쪽 하늘에 새벽의 밝음이 서서히 나타나기 시작한다. 어둠이 가시기 시작한다.
사람들의 생활은 서로 다른것... 나에게는 새날이 시작되지만, 어부에게는 어제가 끝나가는 순간이다.

┗▶There are only about 250 licenses issued in Southern California, and Steve Escobar, a doryman - in fact one of six dorymen left in Newport Beach and Dana Point - has had the privilege of owning a license for the past 19 years.

Steve “Crabby Steve” Escobar (has nothing to do with his personality) has continued with over three generations of dorymen. “Crabby Steve” is up at 3 a.m. ready to start the long day of tending his 200 traps and hopefully finding “keepers” of legal size.

His dory is now fiberglass instead of wood, and he propels it with a new Honda outboard instead of oars. The traps are baited with cat food still in the cans or well-seasoned fish carcasses. Each weighs about 40 pounds, and after a day of lifting and replacing the traps - by hand, by the way - Escobar then puts the day’s catch in live-well traps, then gathers them in the morning to sell at the fish market in Newport Beach.
