Botanical Garden honors Korean friendsBy Connor Adams SheetsThe Queens Botanical Garden has long depended on relationships with the community to keep its operation blooming. The Flushing institution honored its long-lasting connection Tuesday to the sizable Korean-American population that has long supported it with donations, volunteer work and attention. Dr. Joon J. Bang led a charter group of 10 members to form the Korean-American Friends of the Queens Botanical Garden group, which adopted and sponsored the lovely Circle Garden built in a converted fountain on May 21, 2002. Tuesday’s event was a celebration of the group’s decade-long partnership with and commitment to QBG and the enduring beauty of the Circle Garden. “For 10 years there’s been a Korean-American friends group. Dr. Bang approached me 10 years ago and said he wanted to help create a Korean focal point, to introduce people to one another and teach them about the garden,” QBG Executive Director Susan Lacerte said. “The Circle Garden gives a beautiful picture to the relationship between this group and the Korean community.” The fete was also the official unveiling of the Circle Garden’s new signage, which was installed recently with state funds secured by former state Sen. Frank Padavan. The Circle Garden features a range of beautiful flora, including plants native to Korea such as the cosmo, mandina and the country’s national flower, the Rose-of-Sharon. Now it features a bronze plaque made to inform visitors and done in a uniform manner to match other signs at the botanical garden, at 43-50 Main St. “Look at the schoolchildren walking by the garden, enjoying nature. They are the future and that’s why we must contribute what we have. We’re supporting our public institutions because that’s our future,” Bang said. “We are one when we come to the garden or nature, when the children are walking by.” Bang came to America from Korea in 1973 and said the “American spirit” of volunteering, philanthropy and community service has inspired him to do good works such as that which he has done to help the QBG. Top soil was poured into the second pond for lotus and water lilly bed.
Plenty of top soil on the property too, all free.
Second pond wall completed.
It will be under the water except a few stepping stones between two pond.
Only tools I have used are my long rubber boots and a yellow laser level for landscaping.
Far away, one can see an island where birds lay eggs these days.
I am planning a small structure under a willow tree. What kind of building?
It is a million $ question for me, as it will set the tone of this area.
I have plenty of rocks and warer, free.
Entrance to the second pond is indicated by two rocks.

Sun-bae-nim-deul,
It's all matters of money.
Government from Federal to City is Broke these days.
QBG is no exception, because it relies on NY City for
it's half of the annual budget.
Everybody is in favor of building Korean Garden,
but where is money? I only have Passion for it, but
I myself am broke, chipping in only my Time and Effort with
my friends for the goal for the past 10 years which
we will not Stop till the day comes and there after, as long
as QBG is there, even after we're gone (which I hope).
In one word as President Clinton said,
"It's Economy" which applies here too.
PS; Thank you, WM, for letting me share my Passion with
our alumni. It's not for Bragging what I am doing, but it's
for our alumni's concern and interest for the project.
Hwang sun-bae-nim, Rhee sun-bae-nim and Minn sun-bae-bae-nim,
You don't know how grateful I am for your kind comments.
Again, Today is Memorial Day.
Please, include Our Lonely Effort in your Moment of Silence and Prayer.
Thank you all.
PS; Minn sun-bae-nim,
Please, let us know when you finish your project.

http://www.kccla.org/english_/5press_release_view_.asp?ID=1009&page=5
이런 material intensive small small
3.
The unexpected guests:
Texas

What a retirement project you're in, Minn sun-bae-nim.
I envy your energy, launching such a project.
In the beginning of LA Korean Garden, I know they started
with $25 million project. Korean government gave helping
hand with $300,000?. Where can they get other remaining
budget for that? As far as I know,it's almost impossible to
raise such amount of money, unless Americans, private or
public sector, involve. That's where I am interested.
Let me take a few examples, sun-bae-nim.
1. For the total renovation of QBG, the money necessary came
from a) Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of NY City, a billionaire, who
donated $20 million and b)Carnegie Foundation which took care
of the remaining expenses. In total? $47 million.
2. When Michelle attended Havard Business School, I was shocked
when I looked at the wall of the school. It was pasted by the alumni's
names who donated from millions of dollars to hundred thousand $.
3. When Stuyvesant High School, one of the prestigious HSs in NY City,
public, where my 3 children graduated, moved to new location to the
Hudson River-side near the Ground Zero, it was possible by the alumni's
donation which was millions of dollars.
No wonder America is Strong and Powerful.

Yeum-bul-jom
Hae-ssuem-ni-da, sun-bae-nim.
It took us 10 years to be here,
even though it's just the beginning of the road.
I really don't know how many more years we have
to sweat to collect donations, to gavanize people to participate.
Long and tough road is ahead of us, but we have a promise to keep
to ourselves, sun-bae-nim.

I have a few books about Korean Garden, sun-bae-nim
to know what's difference between Chinese or Japanese
Garden which Americans ask me time to time.
They know we have Chinese Garden in Staten Island
and Japanese Garden in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden
which is world famous. But No Korean Garden anywhere
in the Tristate area or other area in the world except in Paris
outside Korea.
We have Master Plan and Blue Print to build Korean Garden,
but No Money. It's small scale, because we took Feasibility
as the first priority.
I always thought "Doing or Building Something that we can
share with others is Better than Nothing".
But again, "It's Economy", sun-bae-nim, I think.
Everybody is busy with their own life to make
ends meet, especially these days, I guess.
