On the edge of the Arabian Desert, Petra was the glittering capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV (9 B.C. to 40 A.D.). Masters of water technology, the Nabataeans provided their city with great tunnel constructions and water chambers. A theater, modelled on Greek-Roman prototypes, had space for an audience of 4,000. Today, the Palace Tombs of Petra, with the 42-meter-high Hellenistic temple facade on the El-Deir Monastery, are impressive examples of Middle Eastern culture.  Petra is the treasure of ancient world, hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains, boasting incomparable scenes that make it the most majestic and imposing ancient site still-standing nowadays. It has been said "perhaps there is nothing in the world that resembles it", actually, for sure, there is nothing in the world that resembles it. The rock-carved rose-red city of Petra is full of mysterious charm, it was "designed to strike wonder into all who entered it". Petra is considered the most famous and gorgeous site in Jordan located about 262 km south of Amman and 133 km north of Aqaba. It is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is now a UNESCO world heritage site and one of The New 7 Wonders of the World that enchants visitors from all corners of the globe. 드믈게 자세히 설명이 붙어서 나오는 Petra의 사진들에 감사합니다.
자세히 보시면, 이 Petra는 바위사이에 흐르는 물과 모래에 깍여진 아주 좁은 협곡의
벽에 새겨진 작품입니다. 이런 좁은 협곡을 "Slot Canyon"이라 하는데,
세계에서 제일 긴 Slot Canyon이 미국 Utah 남부, Arozona와의 경계선에 있읍니다.
이름은 Buckskin Gulch라 하며 Arizona의 경계선에서 Paria Canyon과 합치게 됩니다.
우리 의대 동문중의 한사람이 여기를 다녀온 기록을 이글의 답글로 올립니다.
Petra와는 달리, 인간의 손이 거의 전혀 닿지 않은 자연 그대로 보존된 협곡입니다.
American Indian들이 남겨놓은 petroglyphs 만 가끔 보일뿐입니다.
지금도 여기는 US Bureau of Land Management에서 출입이 통제 제한된 구역입니다.
