Travel Around the Northern Italian Lakes (II)

The magnificent baroque palace and garden located on the Isola Bella, Lago Maggiore, was commissioned by the Count Borromeo, built in 1632. The work on the palace has been ongoing for many years and the finishing touches put in 1959. He named it "Isola Bella" after his wife's name. Charles Borromeo(1538-1584), a leading Counter-Reformation combat against the Protestant Reformation became a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, archbishop of Milan, and a canonized saint in 1610 by the Pope Paul V. Their family Motto is “Humilitas”, means “Humility”, pointing out the humility you need to reach out God.                     |

Borromeo가문에 교황이 직계 자손이 없으니까 조카들을 요직에 등용시켰다는데에서
Nephew, Latin어 Nepho에서 Nepotism이라는 단어가 쓰였다고 하네요.
아무튼 대단한 집안이였던 모양인데 Catholic 귀족들이 누린 영화는 대단했지만
Charles Borromeo는 Francescan으로서 교육, 사회봉사사업을 많이해서
Saint가 되었고 Columbus에 있는 St. Charles Perochial school도 그 예라고 합니다.

Lake Como에 버금가는 Lake Maggiore는 높은 알프스 산아래
온화한 기후의 영향으로 온갖 열대식물이 자라는 아름다운 호수로서
유명한 작가, 시인, 음악가들이 찾아 왔던 곳이다.
특히 일차대전중 헤밍웨이가 요양하던 Stresa라는 도시가 호반에 있고
Borromean Island는 이태리의 귀족 Borromeo가문의 이름인데 그중에
Counter-Revolution Combat의 추종자로서 추기경과 밀란의 대주교가 된
Charles Borromeo<1538-1584)는 1610년에 Pope Paul V로부터 성자로 추대받았다
후에 Count Carlos Borromeo가 1632년에 영부인을 위하여 Barroque style의 별장
Palazzo와 아름다운 정원을 짓고 부인의 이름을 따서 Isola Bella라고 이름지었는데
온갖가지 소장품들과 꽃들과 조각품들과 흰색 공작들이 방문객들을 황홀하게 한다.
그 집안의 가훈 "HUMILITAS"( You need HUMILITY to reach God)라는 글이
그의 문장은 물론 실내와 정원 곳곳에 표기되어 있다.
