AF in elderly folks is the most common arrhythmia and the most common cause
for stroke. Hypertension besides aging is the most common cause of AF.
These are treatable and preventable conditions except for aging.
This case is just another interesting presentation complicated by subdural hemorrhage
from the fall which was caused by the thromboembolic stroke, which was caused by
recurrent paroxysmal AF and left atrial thrombus, which was preventable by the early Dx
and Rx with an antiarrhythmic agent such as beta-blockers and anticoagulation with such as
apixaban.
Baye's syndrome could not have been diagnosed by an average internist but could've been
noticed by a cardiologist.
Excessive aerobics or running in this man was obviously contributing to the onset of AF,
and he should 've been carefully evaluated and monitored by a qualified cardiologist
while continuing his high level of exercise. I don't believe he was.
