어릴때 즐겨 부르거나 들었던 "한떨기 장미꽃이 여기 저기 피었네..."를 기억하시는지. 원래의 英詩 `여름의 마지막 薔薇'는 우리가 이미 익숙해진 `한 떨기 장미꽃'의 원문 가사로서 아일랜드의 시인 `토마스 무어'가 1805년에 이 시를 지어 아일랜드 민요처럼 만든 우아한 정서적인  노래입니다.

시가 나온후에, 죤 스티븐슨 경이 아름다운 멜로디를 시에 붙혀서 "아일랜드 멜로디"라는 그 자신의 작곡전집에 넣어서 하나의 노래로 출판했읍니다.
20세기에 들어와서 세계적으로 대중화된 가곡이며 많은 성악가들이 부르는 노래입니다. 플로토우'의 가극 `마르타'에서도 아리아로 나오고 있습니다.

The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore, who was a friend of Byron and Shelley. Moore wrote it in 1805 while at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland.

Sir John Stevenson set the poem to its beautiful melody and it was published in a collection of Moore's work called Irish Melodies (1807-34). It was made popular in the twenty first century in a recording by Charlotte Church and the Irish Tenors.

This melody was used extensively throughout Friedrich von Flotow's opera "Martha," first performed in 1847 in Vienna. According to the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1954), this opera was a remodelling from a ballet written in conjunction with Burgmuller and Deldevez and produced in Paris in 1844 as "Lady Henriette." It stands to reason, based on the evidence, that Flotow made liberal use of Stevenson's melody.
