Wandering


Wandering is the miller’s joy,

Wandering!

A man isn’t much of a miller,

If he doesn’t think of wandering,

We learned it from the stream,

It doesn’t rest by day or night,

And only thinks of wandering,

We also see it in the mill wheels,

The mill wheels!

They’d rather not stand still at all

and don’t tire of turning all day,

the mill wheels!


Even the millstones, as heavy as they are,

The millstones!

They take part in the merry dance

And would go faster if they could,

Die schone Mullerin (Op. 25, D. 795), is a song cycle by Franz Schubert based on poems by Wilhelm Muller. It is the earliest extended song cycle to be widely performed. The work is considered one of Schubert's most important cycles, and one of the pinnacles of Lied, and it is widely performed and recorded.

Die schone Mullerin is performed by a pianist and a solo singer. The vocal part falls in the range of a tenor or soprano voice, but is often sung by other voices, transposed to a lower range. Since the story of the cycle is about a young man, the work is most often sung by men. The piano part bears much of the expressive burden of the work, and is only seldom a mere "accompaniment" to the singer.

A typical performance lasts around sixty to seventy minutes.


아름다운 물방앗간 아가씨

가곡 분야에 있어서 슈베르트의 업적은 다른 어떤 작곡가와도 비교할 수 없을 만큼 독보적이다. 31세의 짧은 삶 동안 600여 곡의 작품을 작곡한 슈베르트는 18세기 유럽사회에서 일반적으로 통용되던 가곡에 대한 인식, 즉 ‘가곡은 자연스러움과 단순함을 가지고 시의 내용(text)을 잘 전달해야 하는 매개체’라는 통념에서 완전히 벗어나 새로운 형식을 창조해냈다. 그
이전까지는 단순히 텍스트를 전달하는 성악과 시의 운율과 내용을 보조만 하던 피아노 반주 사이의 불균등한 역할 구도를 깨고, 피아노 반주의 존재감을 적극적으로 부각시켜 노래와
반주를 서로 동등한 수준으로 끌어 올렸다. 피아노 반주 역시 노래만큼이나 가곡의 의미와 본질을 전달하는 데 본격적인 역할을 맡게 된 것이다.

슈베르트는 왕립 학교를 마친 1813년부터 리히덴탈의 초등학교 교사로서 3년간 근무하게 되는데 그 당시 접했던 괴테의 작품 [파우스트]에서 강렬한 영감을 얻어 최초의 예술가곡으로 분류할 수 있는 [물레잣는 그레트헨 Gretchen am Spinnrade]을 1814년에 작곡하게 된다.

이 작품에서 비로소 피아노 반주가 성악에 의해 표현되기 힘든 작품의 분위기를 제시하는 역할을 하기 시작하며, 노래와 피아노가 이중창의 요소로 어우러지는 특징이 나타나게 된다. 이러한 슈베르트의 지속적인 시도로 인해 비로소 우리는 이전의 가곡의 범주와는 다른 형태로 분류되는 '예술 가곡’(Kunst-lied)이라는 장르를 얻게 되었다. 슈베르트의 음악세계를 관통했던 예술의 핵심은 바로 이 예술가곡에 있었으며 예술 가곡의 정점은 바로 슈베르트의 대표적인 두 개의 연가곡 [아름다운 물방앗간 아가씨 Die schone Mullerin], [겨울 나그네 Die Winterreise](원제는 겨울여행)를 통해 완성되었다.
