South Korean legislative election A legislative election was held in South Korea on 11 April 2012. The election was won by the incumbent Saenuri Party, which renewed its majority in the National Assembly, despite losing seats. The election has been read as a bellwether for the presidential election to be held later in the year. Parliament consists of 246 directly elected seats and 54 proportional representation seats on the basis of total votes (Total 300 seats). In South Korea's presidential system, the head of state chooses the cabinet, but the loss of control in the parliament could have hampered President Lee's government substantially. Parties and coalitionsFour parties won seats in the 2012 election:
Other parties that put forward candidates included the centre-left New Progressive Party and the centre-right K Party.

A Phillipine native wins parliament seat in KoreaApril 12, 2012 5:00pm A Filipina from Davao and naturalized Korean won a seat for proportional representation at the 19th Korean National Assembly following the general elections on Wednesday. Jasmine Lee, 35, is the first Korean parliamentarian from the growing immigrant community sector of Korean society, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a news release on Thursday. Jasmine Lee"(Lee) is a candidate of the ruling Saenuri (New Frontier) Party, formerly known as the Grand National Party. Saenuri won 25 out of a total of 54 seats for party list representatives. Ms. Lee was number 15 on the list," the DFA said. The ruling Saenuri party also grabbed the majority votes for the 300 parliamentary seats by winning 152 seats. According to the DFA, Vice President Jejomar Binay said Filipinos in Korea were proud that Lee, a full-blooded Filipino, became a member of the Korean Parliament. "It shows that Korea is prepared to extend the opportunity to become a public servant even to those who were not born here," Binay said. Philippine ambassador to Korea Luis Cruz said Lee "has once again made Filipinos in Korea proud in her latest string of achievements as a naturalized Korean." "She has distinguished herself as an ardent advocate of multiculturalism in Korean society. We hope that she will continue to promote the rights and welfare of the 1.2 million growing immigrant community in Korea," Cruz added. Lee grew up in Davao, and met her future husband Lee Dong-ho in 1994 when she was a college freshman majoring in Biology at the Ateneo de Davao University. She has been known in South Korea as an actress, host, and a social worker. She was the director of the Global Resource Center – a nongovernmental organization serving the foreign wives of Koreans. They were married in April 1995, and subsequently moved to Korea. They have two children. Lee became a Korean citizen in 1998. However, her husband died of a heart attack two years ago while rescuing his daughter who was caught in a whirlpool in a mountain stream in Okcheon-dong, Gangwon province while on a family vacation. Since 2006, Lee has appeared as a panelist on the KBS television program "Love in Asia." Last year, she portrayed the role of the mother of the lead actor in the highly acclaimed Korean movie "Wandeuki" (Punch), which drew 5.3 million viewers. In January 2012, she received the Korea Image Millstone Award given to people who successfully blended into Korean society. Presently, Lee regularly gives lectures about multiculturalism in Korea for teachers and student leaders. She is the secretary-general of Waterdrop, a charity formed by foreign spouses of Koreans. - with Rouchelle Dinglasan/VVP/HS, GMA News |

Dr. Moon, You are welcome.
With my limited knowledge in Korean politics, I tried to show what had been going on over there.
Many of us are in constant confusions about Korean politics.
Even the 한누리 당 is a brand-new name. It was formerly 한나라당 and so on....
A philipino's advance to a seat in the national assemby tells us something
that we never dreamed about during our times in Korea.
Soon, we may get another seat or two for the Chinese Korean group?
Then... another seat for Caucasian Americans ??
North Korean's theatrical stupidity of launching a missile could have helped
for the 보수파 winning over the 좌파 세력. ㅎ, ㅎ, ㅎ.
Threatening or bluffing doesn't always bring the the desired effect.
South Korea seems to be rapidly turning into a different nation
from the land we used to remember as our father-land.
All I can say is that we should be smart enough to realize, accept, or tolerate the changes.
That will save a lot of frustrations and anxieties from our hearts.

1. Please, look at the number of foreigners living in Korea - 1.2 million.
Why? Some part of the world thinks Korea Today is their Dream Land.
But what about those Leftists - eating well, dressed well - in Korea?
2. 1% vs 99%? Where's the rationale come from? Isn't it all Relative?
Let's think of our past when our GDP was mere $76- one of the
Poorest among the Poorests in the world.
3. How come there are so many SNU graduates who are Leftists
that are Acting against Our Motherland, instead of Devoting
Themselves for the Country? We all are beneficiaries from ROK.
We paid only 1/2 of the tuition compared with other university
graduates did.
What an Irony this is!

아직도 지방색에 따라 완전히 분리된 남한이 보입니다.
Isn't it a sad thing to watch?
수도권과 전라도 지방에서의 보수파의 패배가 무엇을 의미하는지?
하여간 이번 선거는 12월에 오는 대통령선거와 관련되어
남한 사람들의 정치적 선택을 보여주는군요.
