Dear Friends, The year 2010 is coming to a close. This was our fourth year in Toero. We had an unusually hot and wet Summer this year. We had too much rain and too little sunshine from late Spring till early fall with damaging effect on all plant life including flowers, vegetables, fruits, and crops. We hope for a better weather next year. The year 2010 was, however, good to our family. My father is growing frail but still working at his age 86 in his private office/library, Shilshi-Haksa, everyday and travels long distance with the help of his students. Shilshi-Haksa was recently reorganized into a Foundation with a generous donation of fund from one of his friends. The Shilshi-Haksa Foundation will be run by Board of Directors and will maintain a library and provide Post-Graduate education as has been. Research grants to 15 selected scholars and “Byoksa Award” (“Byoksa” is my father’s pen name) for one distinguish scholar a year are new projects of the Foundation. The Foundation will remain as a monument of my father’s life long academic achievement and his contribution to the society. My first son, Kang Hahn(38) joined the Faculty of The Academy of Korean Studies this year as an Assistant Professor of Korean History at the Post-Graduate School. My second son, Kang Nak(36) is in his senior year at Trent University, Nottingham, U.K. studying product design. He will be busy this year with projects for graduation. He is designing an ocean-going yacht run by environment-friendly energy(sun, wind, and tides) and writing a thesis paper. His wife Hyun Young gave birth to a twin girls, my grand-daughters, on August 20. The twins are apparently doing well but the new parents are struggling to stay in control. My daughter, Kang Mia(32) is a working mother raising two children. Minso(7), my first grand-daughter is busy learning to play flute and piano in addition to her usual school work. Sang Chul(2), my first grand-son is growing busier and more curious by day. Jung Hee and I are in reasonably good health and are enjoying country life as we have. We had a trip to Poland and Sweden this past June. I was invited to talk at the 5th Korea-Poland Seminar, Gdansk, Poland (June 13-17) and at the 7th Congress of The International Association for the History of Nephrology, Torun, Poland (June 17-19) by Professor Boleslaw Rutkowski of Gdansk Univ. We enjoyed the beautiful cities and good foods, thanks to Boleslaw and his colleagues. It was good to see our old friends from Warsaw, Andrzej Werynski and Jacek Waniewski, in Gdansk. We went on to Stockholm, Sweden (June 20-23) to visit with our good friend Bengt Lindholm of Baxter Novum, Karolinska Institute. Kang Nak and Hyun Young joined us in Stockholm and we enjoyed the reunion. Bengt was a gracious host as usual. It was nice to meet with his daughter Anna in Stockholm. I am particularly happy this year to have had the opportunities to meet and dine with many of my colleagues and students from Soon Chun Hyang University College of Medicine. Jung Hee and I were invited to Pohang(Dr. Young Min Kim, April 15-16), Ulsan(Dr. Euna Lee, April 21-22), Chunan(Prof. Yong Hoon Kim, Prof. Se Yong Hong, and Dr. Young Sun Kim et al, May 28-30), Inchun(Dr. Doo Hong Choi et al, July 2-3), Seoul(Prof. Byung Joon Shin, Director of SCH Univ. Hosp., Aug. 21), Kangrung(Dr. Kyung Il Song, Oct. 15-16), and Sokcho(Dr. Mi Kyung Chung et al, Oct. 16-17). It is always nice to be remembered by young people if you are retired and live in country as I. I continue to receive invitations to review manuscripts submitted to International Journals. I co-authored and published 3 original papers in International Journals this year, one with Sung Hee Chung and two with Hunjoo Ha. I also wrote 3 invited reviews in International Journals, two by myself and one together with Yong-Lim Kim. We wish you and your family A Very Happy and Healthy New Year! Very complimentary you are to Dr.Yu's original article,
Hwang sun-bae-nim.
It's nice to see Lee sun-bae-nim who is still Energetic.
PS; When I looked at him with you, Hwang sun-bae-nim,
Lee sun-bae-nim's face is somewhat familiar to me.
Where did I see him? I wonder.

Thanks Dr. Hwang.
I see his active life in his news.
If he still works in Seoul, this old house must be left empty most of the time.
I note he has bamboo bushes in the backyard, some of the roof got replaced with new tiles, and has a fruit tree with +++ red fruits, Chinese dates? (DaeChoo).
