Dear Friends, The year 2019 is coming to a close. The 13th year of our life in Toero was marred by natural and human disasters.
At least 5 typhoons swept through or exerted effects on the Korean peninsula during the summer and fall this year. In Miryang, there were flooding in some areas and poor harvest of rice in other parts including Toero. In Sang-mae-dang, the 81 years old gate to the Men's Quarter and walls on both sides fell to the ground due to heavy rain and wind during the summer. One bright side amid the disasters was that the Men‘s Quarter of Sang-mae-dang underwent major repair this summer through fall and now stands grand in fresh look. The gate and side walls to the Men's Quarter are in reconstruction and will be completed by the end of this year.
My wife Jung was injured in an auto accident on Oct. 28 and sustained multiple fractures and is still in the hospital bed unable to stand on her feet to this day. To make things worse I was stricken by recurrent, acute respiratory and GI tract infections and was forced to stay in bed at home alone for many days. Our 3 children Hahn, Nak, and Mia took turn and came to Miryang /Toero from Seoul one day a week to comfort their mother in hospital and see me at home well fed.
The unfortunate accident that fell upon my wife was ironically the occasion to confirm the love among family members, relatives, neighbors, and friends. Their kind and caring words gave us the strength and courage to struggle through the difficult times. I just hope that she will recover with no complications and can stand on her two feet again in time.
Many Koreans are seriously concerned about the state of our country under the Moon Government. We, however, trust the wisdom of people and hope, in the April 2020 general election, the people will make the right choice and bring the country back to the normal state.
I try to walk an average of 5,000 steps a day to keep me in shape. I still work 2 days a week at Kim's Clinic and Dialysis Unit. I stopped all academic activities except for participation in the annual Korea-Japan DN Seminar and biennial Korea-Poland Seminar on CKD and RRT. I talked on "Optimal blood pressure to protect the kidneys" at Korea-Poland Seminar in Warsaw in October 2018 and "Obesity and the Kidney" at Korea-Japan Seminar in Seoul in October 2019.
We hope the Year was kinder to you and your family and wish you All the Best for the New Year !
Jung Hee and Hi Bahl Lee from Toero, Miryang, Korea

금년에도 어김없이 한국에서 이희발 교수*65께서 E-mail을 통해
Season's greetings
