Neil Leslie Diamond was born on January 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family descended from Russian and Polish immigrants. His father, Akeeba Diamond, was a dry-goods merchant. Diamond grew up in several homes in Brooklyn, attending Abraham Lincoln High School.[3][4] At Lincoln, the school from which he received his high school diploma, he was a member of the fencing team. He later attended NYU on a fencing scholarship, specializing in saber, and was a member of the 1960 NCAA men's championship team; into his adult life he maintained his swordsmanship skills and continued to warm up with fencing exercises before his concerts.[citation needed] In a live interview with TV talk show host Larry King, Diamond explained his decision to study medicine by pointing out: "I actually wanted to be a laboratory biologist. I wanted to study. And I really wanted to find a cure for cancer. My grandmother had died of cancer. And I was always very good at the sciences. And I thought I would go and try and discover the cure for cancer." However, during his senior year in NYU, a music publishing company made him an offer he could not refuse: an offer to write songs for $50 a week. This started him on the road to stardom Neil Diamond is an American singer-songwriter who had a number of worldwide hits in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. As of 2001 Diamond had sold 115 million records worldwide,[1] including 48 million in the U.S.,[2] and was the third most successful Adult Contemporary artist ever on the Billboard chart, behind only Barbra Streisand and Elton John.[1] Diamond continues to tour; his songs have been recorded by performers from many different musical genres. Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984 and in 2000 received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. On Monday, March 14, 2011, Neil Diamond was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Diamond has been named an honoree at the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors. From Wikipedia |

Remembering The Day I Met Neil Diamond;
It was Summer of 1971.
I was sitting at Resting Place where Soldiers could write letters
to their family, or just sipping barley tea,or others, resting after
their daily chores as Soldiers.
I helped my Commander, Col. P install music system at the
Resting Place as his first project for the Soldiers' well-being.
Actually, I was the one that enjoyed the place most, rather
than Soldiers of our batallion. One day I heard "Sweet Caroline
(1969)" on the air. And I immediately fell in love with Neil as
many did those days all over the world.
Whenever I hear Neil's voice, I am going back to those days
when I was 26 years old and to the memories of the batallion
with Col. P. He was one of the great men I met in my life and
still we keep in touch _ Good Old Days!

Can you imagine Neil as a physician? What a waste of great talent would be!
I am glad he changed his mind! Enjoy the music ! KJ
