“저체중은 유행이지만 중년과 노년층에서 사망률을 증가시킨다. 저체중은 BMI 18.5 이하이다.
그러나 BMI가 20-26인 중년에서 사망률이 가장 낮다는 사실을 아는 사람은 많지 않다.
그리고 노인에서에는 비만한 사람에서 사망률이 가장 낮다.”
As a surgeon, it was nice to have a thin patient during the surgical procedures
but I always felt that those thinner people were at more risk and got much sicker
when a complication occurs during the severe illnesses or post surgical period.
The idea of mine was based on my personal clinical experience.
I urged my thinner patients to gain some weight as they are heading for the older age.
My advice was against the general belief and the vogue at that time.
Being thin was the goal of everybody then (and even today).
I preached other doctors and my patients about my belief but no one believed me.
They probably laughed at me behind my back.
And I never had a written medical proof to support my theory.
The article above came out in 1997... Yes, I am glad that I was right.
But, unfortunately, the article came out long after I had retired from the medical practice.
To those guys who didn't believe me, this article is a "postmortem" (post-retirement)
vindication of my belief. My clinical observation had been accurate and correct.
Professor Lee, thank you very much.
My prediction:
The popularity of thinness hit the bubble stage at the present.
In the near future (possibly in a few years), the bubble will slowly deflate
and the thinness will be slowly fade out,
and then, "pleasant plumpness" will be in vogue.
