History Harriet Tubman and $20 bill: Follow the Drinking Gourd(song)

20불 짜리 지폐에서 Andrew Jackson이 뒤편으로 숨고 전면에 Harriet Tubman이 2020 년부터 등장한다고 한다.
전자는 백인 남자인 미국의 제 7대 대통령이고 후자는 흑인 여자로 써 인권 운동의 선구자 이다. 우리는 지금 까지
돈의 가치에만 신경을 쓰고 누구의 얼굴이 돈에 찍혀 있는 가는 별로 관심을 두지 않았다. 흑인과 여성의 인권 운동가인
타브만의 얼굴을 미 재무부가 올려 놓은 것은 역사를 준엄하게 판단한 아주 용기있는 일이라고 생각된다. 독립전쟁후
에 미국의 abolitionist(노예제도 폐지 운동을 하는 사람들)들은 백인에게는 자기 네들을 괴롭히는 테러리스트 였을 것이다.
그러나 200 여년이 지난 후에는 그들은 정의를 위해서 싸운 인권 운동가로 온 국민이 존경하는 인물이 되어 가장 자주 쓰이는
화폐중의 하나인 20 불 짜리 전면에서 우리들을 바라 보게 되었다.
지금 20불 짜리 전면에 있는 잭슨은 왜 그의 초상이 자주 쓰이는 돈에 찍혔는 지 잘 이해가 가지 않는다. 사회 하층 계급의
지지를 받은 민주당을 기반으로 당선된 최초의 대통령이고, South Carolina가 연방으로 부터 독립하는 것을 방지하여
연방정주부를 강화 했고, 인디안을 평정 했으나 거의 genocide에 가까운 방법을 동원 했고, 뱅커들의 횡포를 막는 다는 명목으로
중앙은행을 폐지했으나 인기몰이로 재선의 목적이 더 컸다고 한다. 나중에 이 정책은 경제에 악 영향을 미치게 된다
타브만은 마릴란드의 농장에서 흑인 노예의 딸로 태어 났다. 그는 단신으로 농장에서 아볼리숀니스트의 비밀 루트인
"underground railroad"를 통해서 필라델피아로 도망 나온 다음 그녀의 가족을 탈출 시킨다. 그 후 약 10 년 동안 많은
노예들 도주를 도와 주었다고 한다. 남북전쟁 동안에는 "cooking commander"를 시작 했고, 남군 점령 지역에 들어가서
병사들을 모집했고, 스파이 노릇을 했다고 한다. 그는 북군과 같이 South Carolina 에 진격하여 700명의 노에를 해방 시켰다.
전쟁후에는 여자들의 선거권 쟁취를 위해서 일 했다.
유 튜브 비데오의 노래, "Follow the Drinking Gourd"는 당시 아볼리숀니스트들이 그 가사를 이용해서 도주하는 노예들에게
알리기 위한 일종의 암호 역활을 했다고 한다. 여기서 "고드"는 물 떠 먹는 표주 박을 뜻 하는 데 북두칠성이 표주 박과 비슷해서
밤에 북두칠성을 바라보고 움직이라는 뜻이라고 한다. ole(old) man은 officer(commmander)를 뜻하고 20 마일 마다
배치 되었다. 매추라기는 남쪽에서 겨울을 나는 철새이므로 겨울에 탈출 하라는 뜻이다. 마지막 관문인 오하이오 강이 얼었을
때 건너야 하기 때문이다. 겨울에 북두칠성을 바라보며 officer의 지시에 따라 움직이면 된다는 뜻이다. 타브만은 이 노인의
일을 17번이나 했다고 한다. 당시 그의 목에 걸린 현상금은 무려 $1000달했다.
극심한 차별과 편견 때문에 역사속에 묻여 버린 흑인들을 그 진가를 제대로 알아 내서 그에 걸 맏는 대접을 해주는 것은
우리 소수 민족들이 크게 환영할 일이라고 생각한다. greenback dollar는 세계에서 가징 부강한 나라, 미국의 상징이다.
이번 타브만을 20불 짜리 greenback에 올리기로 한 것은 미국이 여자건 남자건 흑인이건 백인 이건, 성별이나 피부 색갈에 상관없이
모든 시민들이 다 공헌 할수 있는 강력하고 훌륭한 나라임을 세계 만방에 알리는 쾌거 이다.

To Saar’s Nocturne Navigator
This is Alison Saar’s Nocturne Navigator, my favorite piece at the Columbus Museum of Art. I believe Saar finished this work in 1998, and I have heard tell that through this creation, she was aiming to honor the spirit of those escaped and emancipated slaves who navigated northward around and during the Civil War era. I can see this. This makes sense to me. But when I first saw Nocturne Navigator, she showed me something different.
NOCTURNE NAVIGATOR, ALISON SAAR, 1998 / "I wanted to talk about the navigator spirit that led so many people to find their way north," Saar remarked. Nocturne Navigator is Saar's metaphor for America's spirit of freedom.:

Entreaty.
Hands open and close, nostrils flare, releasing the vacant and vast
Deathless vacuum that blankets The Universe in royal cloth.
She asks Time to take its place as God.
It moves The Wheel.
Her quiescent hands capture It, and unflinching, she draws It to her
and becomes God to God.

Blind, Deaf, Mute
The Universe wanders within Herself.
Unaware of Herself.
What is She searching for?
Smoldering stars,
Orbs spinning into the pierced indigo void,
Little dynamos powering Her movement through Herself.
She peers into the hollow womb that is the sky,
Her own sky,
She is the sky.
She navigates Nothingness,
Her arms outstretched, inviting a guide.
She is rudderless and spinning.
In her liquid search She lights the way
And gives birth.

Supplication to your immortal God.
Hands pray to the Cosmos,
Order and harmony.
It will all disappear into the nothing that it came from.
The ocean that we all navigate.
Time.
Calling down the gods,
The stars that burst forth from the underpinnings of your skirt have hovered beneath that heavy darkness.
Moving wavelike.
Always unmoved.
Inhale the vaporous dust.
Exhale the billowing winds that move the stars and tides while gods peer into the fishbowl,
Watching them settle calmly into orbit around themselves.
Lapping waves.
Never knowing they aren’t the center.
You wisely keep them contained within the hem of the sky, where they create.
Trapped in a place outside of which,
There is no time.

To Saar’s Nocturne Navigator

1945년은 제가 태어나기 1년전이 네요. 그래도 가족이 함께 탈출하셔서 참다행입니다. 인제, 원통은 험악한 최전방으로 알고 있는 데, 운영자님의 고향은 지금 남한 땅인 가요? -
윗 편지는 아마 1920년 이후이겠지요. Searched webpage에 날자가 없읍니다.
Civil War 가 1865년에 끝났기에 1920년대에는 "Follow the drinking gourd"라는 노래가
필요 없을 때이지만, 아마 사람들이 전해 내려오는 Folk poem or song으로 낭만적 기분으로(?) 불렀던 모양입니다.
본인의 고향은 강원도 인제군 원통면 서화리 입니다.
아버님이 그당시의 새마을운동 (상록수)의 일부로 서울에서 학교 마치시고
거기 깊은 산골로 이사가셨고 거기에서 본인과 남동생이 태어났는데,
우리 둘이 전염병에 걸렸을때 본인은 겨우 살아났지만,
동생은 그때 어릴때 그 산골을 벗어나지 못한채 죽었지요.
1945년 남한으로 도망쳐 나왔을때까지 당나귀 길만 있었던 산골에서
자동차가 뭔지 모르고 자랐읍니다.Kentucky, being south of the Mason-Dixon line (Ohio River), it belonged to The South.
However, the slavery system wasn't as bad or cruel as the deep south.
I am mentioning this because Kentucky is my home away home in America (제 2의 고향). -

First of all, Webmaster, I am so relieved to hear that
the five year old boy in 1945 was so smart
to understand the situation "not cough or talk",
and knew the moment he was freed to ask...
Columbus Ohio was one of the important safe houses
on the Undergraound Railroad Movement.
At Columbus Museum of Art(CMA), we have a giant size sculpture of a woman in night blue dress
with a gesture of guiding or praying with her two hands lifted toward sky,
and on her puffy skirt(copper) are numerous holes through which
the light from underneath(Installed floloscent light bulb) shine through.
The holes are suggesting the Big Dipper in the night sky
on the way to freedom through the underground railroad.
The artist Allison Saar was invited to Columbus
and asked to create an art work to represent Columbus
and she thought of the Underground Railroad Movement
and created this symbolic sculpture, "Nocturne Navigator".
Often the viewers are reminded of Harriet Tubman seeing this sculpture
although the artist said this is not the statue of Harriet Tubman herself.
I frequently use this sculpture in my tour, especially with school children. -

I was short of bringing the photo of "Nocturne Navigator" yesterday
and you did it over night, Dr. 온기철 and Webmaster.
So glad to see it on this page which I share with the students
and general visitors to the Columbus Museum of Art as a docent.
There seem to be a lot of different versions of this song, "Follow the drinking gourd."
However, the meanings are all same.
You start from Alabama in early spring (at the first quail call),
then move northward (following the Big Dipper)
to Tennesse and then Kentucky near Paducah
where Tennessee River and Ohio River meet.
There you meet with someone from the underground railroad"
who would get you to cross the river.
(Frozen Ohio River ? I lived at the shore of Ohio River for about 30 years
but never saw it frozen enough to cross over on foot.)
Once you cross the Ohio River (presumably on a boat by the "Old Man"),
you are in Indiana, the territory of the North.
You are free then !!
Looking back, it is a sad story of the black people,
escaping the slavery of the Confederate South.
This story reminds me of the same sad and deeply emotional story that our family
had gone through in the process of escaping the slavery of communist North Korea
across the 38 parallel in the fall of 1945. I was 5 years old then.
We kept the "drinking gourd" at our back during this escape.
Believe it or not, there was an "Underground Railway" at the 38 parallel as well.
In the deep mountain valley of 강원도 인제군 원통면 서화리,
our family abandoned our old home and started on foot, headfing south for a few days.
Then one moonless dark night, following a guide, we crossed the 38 parallel
passing just beside the Russian military guard station.
The station was dimly lit with a light. We kept our eyes on it with silence
and slowly slid through a steep hillside to the south.
If we slipped on the hill, we would have fallen into the So-Yang River (소양강).
As the youngest child in the fleeing caravan, I was told not to cough or talk.
After we finally crossed over the line, it was still dark.
In the darkness, I saw my mother and asked, "May I cough and talk now?"
My mom told me, "Yes, you may."
There, our family came into the new free world !!
And.... You could guess the rest of the story.
