Etymology

The Lorelei is a 132 m (433 ft) high, steep slate rock on the right bank of the River Rhine in the Rhine Gorge (or Middle Rhine) at Sankt Goarshausen in Germany.

The name comes from the old German words loren, Rhine dialect for "murmuring", and the Celtic term ley "rock". The translation of the name would therefore be: "murmur rock" or "murmuring rock". The heavy currents, and a small waterfall in the area (still visible in the early 19th century) created a murmuring sound, and this combined with the special echo the rock produces to act as a sort of amplifier, giving the rock its name. The murmuring is hard to hear today owing to the urbanization of the area. Other theories attribute the name to the many accidents, by combining the German verb "lauern" (to lurk, lie in wait) with the same "ley" ending, with the translation "lurking rock".

내가 혜화국민학교 삼, 사학년 시절 돈암동 경동중학근방에 위치한 광업진흥회사 사택에서 살 때였다. 어느 날 관옥 누나가 내게 이야기를 들려주었다. “독일에 큰 강이 있는데, 거기에 배가 많이 다닌단다. 또 강에는 큰 바위가 있는데 ‘로렐라이’라고 부른다. 언젠가 뱃사공이 그리로 지날 때 그 바위위에 어여쁜 여자가 노래를 부르고 있어서, 그 여자를 보려고 배를 돌려 그리로 가다가 센 물쌀에 떠밀려 배가 바위에 부딪혀 가라앉고 또 뱃사공도 죽었다.” 나는 노래 불러서 뱃사공을 죽게 한 그 여자가 무서웠다. 그곳에 가면 바위에 가까이 가지 말아야겠다고 생각했다. 그후 가끔 ‘로렐라이’란 이름을 읽을 때가 있었다. 이번에 한번 찾아보려는 생각이 들어 Images, Youtube 그리고 Lyrics를 찾아 실었다. 그러면 관옥 누나는 누군가? 성악가 이관옥 교수이며, 해방 후 우리나라에서 처음으로 공연했던 "춘향전"에 춘향이로 출연하였던 유명 음악인이다. 내가 어찌 이렇게 잘 아는가? 관옥 누나가 표 두 장을 주어서 순이누나가 나를 데리고 둘이 가서 참관했기 때문이며 그 때 지휘자는 현진건씨였다. 나보다 거의 이십세 위인데, 부친간의 친분으로 내가 누나라고 부르며 많이 따랐고 또 누나는 나에게 잘 해주었다. 오래 된 이야기다.
