Galaxy Rotation Coherent with the Motions of Neighbors: Discovery of Observational Evidence

We present our discovery of observational evidence for the coherence between galaxy rotation and the average line-of-sight motion of neighbors. We use the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey data analyzed with the Python CALIFA STARLIGHT Synthesis Organizer (PyCASSO) platform, and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog. After estimating the projected angular momentum vectors of 445 CALIFA galaxies, we build composite maps of their neighbor galaxies on the parameter space of line-of-sight velocity versus projected distance. The composite radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted mean velocity of neighbors show striking evidence for dynamical coherence between the rotational direction of the CALIFA galaxies and the average moving direction of their neighbor galaxies. The signal of such dynamical coherence is significant for the neighbors within 800 kpc distance from the CALIFA galaxies, for which the luminosity-weighted mean velocity is as large as 61.7+/-17.6 km/s (3.5-sigma significance to bootstrap uncertainty) when the angular momentum is measured at R_e<R<=2R_e of each CALIFA galaxy. In the comparison of the subsamples, we find that faint, blue or kinematically misaligned galaxies show stronger coherence with neighbor motions than bright, red or kinematically well-aligned galaxies do. Our results indicate that (1) the rotation of a galaxy (particularly at its outskirt) is significantly influenced by interactions with its neighbors up to 800 kpc, (2) the coherence is particularly strong between faint galaxies and bright neighbors, and (3) galaxy interactions often cause internal kinematic misalignment or possibly even kinematically distinct cores.

Mysterious Coherence in Several-Megaparsec Scales Between Galaxy Rotation and Neighbor Motion

In our recent report, observational evidence supports that the rotational direction of a galaxy tends to be coherent with the average motion of its nearby neighbors within 1 Mpc. We extend the investigation to neighbors at farther distances, in order to examine if such dynamical coherence is found even in large scales. The Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey data and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog are used. From the composite map of velocity distribution of 'neighbor' galaxies within 15 Mpc from the CALIFA galaxies, the composite radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted mean velocity of neighbors are derived. These profiles show unexpectedly strong evidence of the dynamical coherence between the rotation of the CALIFA galaxies and the average line-of-sight motion of their neighbors within several Mpc distances. Such a signal is particularly strong when the neighbors are limited to red ones: the luminosity-weighted mean velocity at 1 < D <= 6 Mpc is as large as 30.6+/-10.9 km/s (2.8-sigma significance to random spin-axis uncertainty) for central rotation (R <= Re). In the comparison of several subsamples, the dynamical coherence tends to be marginally stronger for the diffuse or kinematically-well-aligned CALIFA galaxies. For this mysterious coherence in large scales, we cautiously suggest a scenario that it results from a possible relationship between the long-term motion of a large-scale structure and the rotations of galaxies in it.

국내연구진이 은하들의 상호작용과 회전의 상관관계를 규명했다. 은하의 운동학적 특성의 이해와 기원의 추적은 진화 과정을 규명하는 주요 단서다.

한국천문연구원(원장 이형목)은 이준협 연구진이 은하의 회전방향과 이웃 은하 운동방향간의 상관성을 발견했다고 21일 밝혔다. 

연구진은 3차원 분광 관측 자료를 통해 정확한 회전방향 측정이 가능한 400여개 은하들을 분석했다. 3차원 분광 관측은 은하의 스펙트럼을 공간으로 잘게 쪼개 분석할 수 있게 해주는 관측기법이다.

연구진은 분석된 은하들의 회전축을 나란히 정렬해 주변에 위치한 이웃 은하들의 운동방향 분포를 겹쳐봤다. 관찰자로부터 멀어지고 있는 운동과 가까워지고 있는 운동을 구분해, 은하의 회전 방향이 이웃 은하의 평균 운동 방향과 뚜렷한 상관성을 보인다는 사실을 알아냈다.

상관성은 최대 260만광년 떨어진 이웃 은하들에서도 발견됐다. 은하가 1억년에 약 6만광년을 이동한다고 추정할때, 은하는 약 40억년전에 다른 은하와 만났던 기억을 회전이라는 운동학적 성질로 간직하고 있는 셈이다.

은하의 회전과 이웃 은하 운동의 상관성은 외곽부 회전에서 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 이는 은하의 바깥쪽이 안쪽에 비해 외부 영향을 많이 받기 때문이다. 또한 회전하는 은하가 어둡고 가벼울수록, 이웃 은하는 밝고 무거울수록 상관성이 높게 나타난다.

가벼운 은하는 외부의 영향을 받기 쉽다. 반대로 무거운 이웃 은하는 다른 은하에 쉽게 영향을 준다. 이는 운동학적 상관성이 은하와 은하 사이의 직접적인 상호작용에서 기원함을 뒷받침한다. 

이번 연구에는 칼리파(CALIFA) 데이터가 관측자료로 사용됐다. 이는 독일·스페인이 공동 운영하는 칼라 알토 천문대(Calar Alto Observatory)에서 공개·제공하는 3차원 분광 탐사관측 자료다.

은하들의 상호작용은 회전과 같은 운동성 외에도 많은 흔적을 남긴다. 은하를 구성하는 별들의 나이 분포, 전체적인 형태 등이 바뀌기도 한다. 젊은 별들은 상호작용으로 인해 시간이 지나면 늙는다. 은하의 형태도 상호작용 직후엔 복잡해지지만, 시간이 흐르면서 무디고 단순하게 변한다.

반대로 물체가 회전하는 정도를 나타내는 각운동량은 에너지처럼 물리량이 보존된다. 외부의 영향을 받아 각운동량의 변화가 발생하면, 추가적인 외부 영향이 있기연구진은 은하의 운동학적 연구를 더욱 확장하기 위해, 차세대 대규모 3차원 분광 탐사관측 프로젝트 '헥터(Hector)' 참여를 추진중이다. 헥터는 오스트레일리아 천문대에서 최대 약 3만개의 은하들을 대상으로 진행하고 있는 탐사관측 프로젝트다.

이준협 박사는 "지금까지는 다양한 환경에 따라 은하가 얼마나 빠르게 회전하는지에 초점을 둔 연구들이 많았다"며 "은하의 화전축·방향을 결정하는 요인과 관련된 연구는 최근에서야 주목받고 있다"고 말했다. 또 "은하의 회전방향이 이웃 은하의 운동방향에 영향을 받을 수 있다는 점에 착안해, 새로운 연구성과를 내놓을 수 있었다"고 덧붙였다.

한편 연구 결과는 천문학 분야 국제학술지 미국 천체물리학저널(The Astrophysical Journal)에 지난 10일자로 게재됐다.

For a change a Korean astronomer, 이준협, came up with a significant contribution to astronomy 

with his original observation regarding the synchronized movements of all the distant

galaxies, which is said to be unexplainable by gravity or any other theory.
