Messiah는 1741년  George Frideric Handel가 작곡한  English로 된 Oratorio 로   작사는 King James Bible과  Book of Common Prayer의  Charles Jennens의 작품입니다. 이곡은 처음 4월 13 일 1742 년에 Dublin에서 상연했으며 호응이 별로 좋지 않았으나 1 년후London에서 상연후 Western music에서 가장많이 상연하는 곡입니다.

 

Jennen의  Text는 Isaiah등의  Prophet의 예언과 같이 Messiah로써의  Virgin birth 의 Jesus Christ의 출생    그의 수난과 ,죽음, 부활, 그리고 승천 하여 하늘에서의  영광으로 승리하는 Jesus Christ를 그린 것입니다.이곡은 그후 많은 음악가 들이 수정을 햇는데 그중 Mozart도  수정햇답니다.

 

Handel은 이곡을 24일 만에 완성햇답니다. London  에서 3월 23일 1743에 공연할때  King George 11가 Hallelujah 때 일어 나서 부터  Hallelujah 합창 때는 모두 일어 선다 하지만 그 증거는 없답니다.
