Summit Climb of Mount Spalding

Mount Evans is the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The prominent 14,271-foot (4,350 m) fourteener is located in the Mount Evans Wilderness, southwest by south of the City of Idaho Springs in Clear Creek County, Colorado.

The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline, rising over 9,000 feet above the area.

Mount Evans is the highest peak in a massif known historically as the Chicago Peaks. The peak is 35 miles (56 km) west of Denver, "as the crow flies", and approximately 51 miles (82 km) by road, via Idaho Springs. The other peaks in the massif are:
Mount Spalding (13,842 feet), 1.1 mile northwest
Gray Wolf Mountain (13,602 feet), 2.2 miles north-northwest
The Sawtooth (13,780 feet), 1.2 miles west
Mount Bierstadt (14,060 feet), 1.5 miles west-southwest
Mount Warren (13,307 feet), 1.2 miles north-northeast
Rogers Peak (13,391 feet), 2.33 miles northeast.

At least 7 deep glacial cirques cut into the Chicago Range. The cirques around Mount Evans are the deepest cirques in the Colorado Rockies.[12] The bottoms of many of these contain tarns, the most notable being:
Summit Lake at the head of Bear Creek, 0.5 miles north
the Chicago Lakes at the head of Chicago Creek, 2 miles north
Abyss Lake at the head of Lake Fork, 1 mile west-southwest

The Mount Evans Scenic Byway consists of State Highway 103 from Idaho Springs, Colorado on I-70 about 13 miles (21 km) to Echo Lake, and Colorado 5 from Echo Lake 15 miles (24 km), ending at a parking area and turnaround just below the summit. The latter has long been the highest paved road in North America and is only open in the summer.

Most of the Mount Evans massif is now part of the Mount Evans Wilderness area in Arapaho National Forest and Pike National Forest. The exception is a narrow corridor along the highway from Echo Lake that is excluded from the wilderness. Summit Lake Park and Echo Lake Park, are part of the historic Denver Mountain Parks system.

여기에서 제일 높은 봉우리가 Mount Evans, 그 바로 왼쪽이 Mount Spalding이다.



┗▶2012년 9월 8일 아침, 정상등반전 Summit Lake에서 찍은 180도 panorama 사진, 오른쪽 끝에 Mount Spalding, 왼쪽 끝에 Mount Evans의 정상이 보인다. 가운데 있는 큰 봉우리도 14,000 feet이 넘지만 가까이 같은 능선을 차지해서 독립된 정상으로 쳐주지 않는다.



┗▶Summit Lake Park의 주차장에서 시작해서 Counter clockwise 로 Mount Spalding의 동쪽 능선으로 올라가 정상등반하고, 다시 남쪽으로 내려와 두 산사이의 Saddle로 내려와 Evans의 북쪽 능선을 타고 올라가다가, 서쪽 능선으로 접어들어 Mount Evans의 정상에 오른다. 정상에서 동쪽 능선을 타고 내려와서 Highway를 만나 Summit Lake에 돌아온다.



┗▶Mount Evans의 등반 코스가 여러개 있다. 우리는 이중에서 중간쯤 쉬운편에 속하는 "Summit Loop" course를 택했다.
빨간 점선이 우리의 Couterclockwise의 등반과 하산길을 보여준다. 전장 약 5 miles에, 총 고도는 오르막 내리막을 다 합쳐서 1,800 feet 이며,
최저 고도는 12,830' (3,911 m)이며, 최고 고도는 14,265' (4,348 m)이다.

┗▶Summit Lake 공원으로서 연방정부에 소속된 땅이지만, Mount Evans Highway와 Summit Lake Park는 Denver 市가 운영한다.
Denver downtown에서 36 miles 떨어져있고, Denver 시내보다 7,000 feet 높이 있고, 1924년부터 Denver의 City Park으로 소속되었다. Colorado Springs이 Pikes Peak을 관광용으로 개발하자, Denver도 Mount Evans를 개발했다.



┗▶Summit Lake 공원안의 안내판. 12,830 feet (3,911 meters)로 미국에서 가장 높은 "Municipal Park, 시립공원"이라고 한다.

보통 여기에 언제나 눈이 늦게까지 남아있는데 금년에는 눈이 녹아서 없다.

┗▶Chicago Creek Valley. Upper and Lower Chicago Lakes. Echo Lake (10,650')에서 시작, Chicago Lake Trail을 거쳐서 summit (14,264') 등반이 "Full" climbing route로서, 5,600 vertical climbing에 17 mile round trip이다. Let them do it while we were taking a short cut.

┗▶뒤돌아 내려보며, 가까운 고래등이 Mount Warren (13,307 ft / 4,056 m), 더 왼쪽 먼산이 Rogers Peak (13,391', 4,082 m)
Colorado thirteeners (13,000 feet이 넘는 산들, Mount Spalding을 포함) 중의 둘이다.
고도 13,000 feet를 넘으며 산소가 희박해지며 Climbers들의 걸음이 늦어지며 자주 쉰다. 또 우리도 일부러 천천히 간다.

이미 이곳은 12,000 feet (tree line) 위의 고지로 전혀 없다. 삭막하게 보이지만 여름에는 야생화로 가득찬다.

이 구름이 여차하면 오후에 비와 천둥으로 바뀐다.

┗▶Spalding 정상에 도달, 건너편 남쪽으로 웅대한 Mount Evans가 보인다. Evans의 정상은 왼쪽 끝에 있다. 사진방향때문에 오른쪽이 높이 보일뿐이다. 여기의 정상 능선은 이미 14,000 feet가 넘는다.

In your illusions, don't get confused with other sub-peaks of similar heights in the summit ridge.



Nobody gave up further climbing. We were all in good shapes. Time for the further climbing for the Evans' summit.
