We read and also saw the lotus flower paintings on the book so many times but I haven't seen a real lotus until we settled here in the Washington DC area. Indeed we have a small pond at National Arboretum here in Washington DC, where we saw such beautiful lotus flowers for the first time and so fascinated with such beauty. Though it was more than twenty years ago, I still remember such fresh elegant looking flowers out of muddy water. So I presume there are many poems for these lotus flowers!
Anyhow, many consider this lotus as the symbol of Buddhism, Buddha sitting on the lotus, but it is more popular among Hindi as one of the symbols of Hinduism, I also learned.

p.s. BTW, the lotus is also a part of ancient Egyptian beliefs we see often through their wall painting and sculptures! So the lotus seems to be the only flower involved in various religions I presume.

I had the same experience as yours, reading about lotus and seeing the pictures but not real lotus flowers in the lotus ponds.
Years ago, I visited 경주 and found a famous lotus pond with flowers so beautiful and enchanting.
As you said, lotus has been Buddhist's symbols and as well as Hinduism's.
However, this poet didn't seem to be related to Buddhism.
I just came back from Manhattan and Southampton, New York after two weeks' stay.
I even went to Fort Lee, New Jersey to look for an apartment, and plan to move there to be near our son at my old age.
I plan to move there as early as next month and will be able to see several friends.
I will let you know how it is for me to experience the change from Rochester, NY to Fort Lee, NJ.

Wow, what a change, KwanHo!
So you would move out from Upstate completely, then?
Well, I hope you wouldn't miss such a unique condition you live in now!

Talking about the lotus flowers, luckily, I have seen many of them in different places.
I had experienced one rare divine and spooky moment about 5 years ago.
A story of unknown lotus lake:
One day in summer, I and my climbing partner, Yunjae Rhee were hiking through a deep wood
at 9,500 feet altitude, looking for 송이버섯, at the lower part of the Wapiti Trail
off the Baptiste Trail, a branch of the main Sourdough Trail near the Beaver Reservoir.
On my map I was holding, I saw a tiny round no-named marker that looked like a small lake.
No one ever mentioned such a lake as far as we knew.
I talked to my partner, "Let's check what this is. It's not far away from us."
We got out of the Wapiti Trail and headed east in the direction of the unknown tiny marker.
After getting up a small hill, we looked down deep into a small darkened valley in the forest.
And there was a small lake with pitchy dark water-surface in the eerily pervasive silence
with unusually darkened surroundings even in the daylight among the heavily wooded slope.
The lake had no name and we had never heard about it from anyone we knew.
One-half of the lake was covered with lotus plants growing out of the water with no flowers.
There were no signs of any human traffic or activities and it seemed that we were the only ones.
We admired the lotus plants, however, we were somewhat frightened with cold sweat on our backs
as if we had entered a forbidden corner and seen something that we were not allowed to see.
It was a very strange feeling and frightening moment for us.
We decided to come back here again in the flowering season for the lotus flowers.
We have never gone back there again but I will do it again someday for sure.
I wouldn't be going there alone. It was just too eerie, strange, and remote.
I am sure I can find the place again if it is still there and it was not in our daydream.
P.S. There is a well-known lake with lotus flowers at Red Rock Lake
at the entrance of Brainard Lake National Monument in the Front Range of the Rockies,
south of the Rocky Mountain National Park. I saw one in the Yellowstone National Park.

It certainly sounds eerie, Steve. Indeed for some reason, it grows in the pond which is not much friendly in comparison to river or lake, perhaps due to dark water shaded by such broad leaves.
That kind of feeling might have made the lotus one of the religious symbols, who knows!
