South Korean Kim Si-woo reacts after holing his final putt to win the US PGA Tour American Express event at La Quinta, California

South Korean Kim Si-woo rolled in back-to-back birdies at 16 and 17 to overtake sizzling Patrick Cantlay and win the US PGA Tour event in La Quinta, California, by one stroke.
Kim, who started the day sharing a one-shot lead with Max Homa and Tony Finau, fired eight birdies in an eight-under par 64 for a 23-under total of 265.
Cantlay had stormed to a narrow clubhouse lead with 11 birdies in an 11-under par 61 -- a course record on the Stadium Course at PGA West and enough to put him one ahead of Kim as the South Korean was coming up the finishing straight.
Kim regained a share of the lead with his seventh birdie of the day at the par-five 16th, where he reached the green in two and two-putted from 50 feet -- leaving himself less than four feet for birdie.
At 17, Kim poured a 19-foot birdie putt into the heart of the cup to regain the lead.
"No. 16, I really needed a birdie to make the playoff, and after I made the birdie on No. 16, I felt more confident. I felt more comfortable. So I tried to hit it more confidently on 17's putt, so that's how I made it," said Kim, who polished off the win with a textbook par at the par-four 18th, his final stroke a tap-in.
The 25-year-old from Seoul notched his third US PGA Tour title, but his first since the 2017 Players Championship.
"So, I had many chances since the Players. I had many chances to win, but I couldn't make it, but finally I made it.
"I tried to keep (my) composure and I made it. I'm so happy with that."
Kim, who pulled out of last year's tournament in the desert east of Los Angeles with a back injury after a tough first round, had consolidated his position with four birdies on the front nine and added two more at 10 and 11.
- Cantlay on fire -
But Cantlay was in hot pursuit. He got going with a five-foot birdie at the second and added three straight at the fourth, fifth and sixth -- where he rolled in a 33-footer.
Birdies at eight and nine saw him make the turn six-under for the round and 17-under for the tournament.
After birdies at 11 and 13 he drained another long birdie at the 15th and tied for the lead with a birdie at 16.
The icing on the cake -- and the solo lead -- came with a 38-foot birdie bomb at the 18th
Kim said he was watching the leaderboard and knew where Cantlay was. But he also knew he had plenty of birdie opportunities on the back nine.
"I tried to keep patient and I believed in myself, and I got the chance on 16 and 17," he said.
It was a further two strokes back to Australian Cameron Davis, who fired a 64 for solo third on 268.
Finau settled for a 68 that left him alone in fourth on 269 while Homa endured a tough day in the final group, carding a four-over 76 that left him 11-over for the tournament.

김시우 played flawless golf today. He made all the birdies he was supposed to make
and a few more today. He did not make any mistake at all for 4 days. It was a perfect
golf, if there is such a thing. That's why he won. How could anybody beat it?
I felt so sorry to witness the major collapse of 임성재 on the 9th hole yesterday. He
has to learn when to back it up and when to attack. Kim seems to be more mature
than Im. Kim is 25 and Im is 22. I think these two young men will carry Korean
pride in PGA. We will see them winning majors in one of these days.
It was a busy Sunday between golf and football. Tom Brady did it once again. He beat
the odds. Kim is 1,200,600 richer today. It is not too bad for 4 day work.

I have enjoyed thoroughly watching this tournament.
Si-Woo Kim used to be very aggressive player, but
he seemed to be more mature in managing the game.
He has weathered nicely against fierce coming back
from Cantlay(61) and Davis(64) and prevailed at the end.
His second shot at par-5 16th hole landed so softly
on the green to be able to make 2 putts-birdie and
made clutch 19 feet birdie putt at 17th hole. Those
were keys for championship to me. KJ

Si-Woo Kim has won 3 PGA wins with this one and jumped up World rankings to
48th and 9th in Fed-Ex Rankings. Any win needed to be lucky as well. Homa's
putting first from the same area at 17th was definitely helpful for Si-Woo's birdie
putt. Belated congratulation to Mrs. Lee's birdie at the 17th hole!!, Great!! KJ

Thank you, KJ.
It was great to watch our three favorite players to play
at the same time, Si-woo Kim, Danielle Kang and Tom Brady.
We Michiganders are going to root for Tom Brady for sure.
Go Blue!

This will be Tom Brady's 10th Super Bowl and he had owned 6 rings.
He sure is a living legend in NFL.
Tom Brady made Super Bowl more intereting to us! Go! Blue! KJ

김시우 was impressive in all aspects of the game with a gutsy performance.
He made a birdie at 16 to tie the first place followed by another birdie at
17, the island green, to take the lead at the Stadium Course, La Quinta.
He had 19 ft putt at 17, about the same distance my wife made for birdie,
which cost me several hundred dollars for wine at the dinner table with
my high school buddies. That was exactly 7 years ago.
Certainly, this island green at 17 is a memorable hole for my wife and me.
By the way, she used her driver to put the ball about 20 ft from the pin.
Her three playing partners all hit their balls into the water.
