The periaqueductal gray (PAG, also known as the central gray) is a brain region that plays a critical role in autonomic function, motivated behavior and behavioural responses to threatening stimuli.[1][2] PAG is also the primary control center for descending pain modulation. It has enkephalin-producing cells that suppress pain.
The periaqueductal gray is the gray matter located around the cerebral aqueduct within the tegmentum of the midbrain. It projects to the nucleus raphe magnus, and also contains descending autonomic tracts. The ascending pain and temperature fibers of the spinothalamic tract send information to the PAG via the spinomesencephalic tract (so-named because the fibers originate in the spine and terminate in the PAG, in the mesencephalon or midbrain).(from Wikipedia)

[Researchers in a small but growing field search for neural correlates of religiosity and spirituality.]
This is a fascinating report, to say the least, and no surprise to me.
As far back as some 40 years ago, I was having a discussion
with a cloistered nun on the same subject who provided me
an article by a neuroscientist who strongly believed that
our Creator who created us made sure that each human brain has
neural network or circuit which will allow him to find a way to reach HIM.
Now these scientists are claiming that they found such a neural network
that obviously has a lot to do with human evolution and his survival.
"Our results suggest that spirituality and religiosity are rooted in fundamental,
neurobiological dynamics and deeply woven into our neuro-fabric" said
author Michael Ferguson, Ph.D., a principal investigator in the Brigham's
Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics in a press release.
"We were astonished to find that this brain circuit for spirituality is centered
in one of the most evolutionarily preserved structures in the brain."
