나는 1950년대에 어떤 수필가의 산문을 고3 국어교과서에서 처음 읽었고 많은 감명을 받았다.
로마 황제 마르쿠스 아우렐리우스가 말하기를, 나무위 잎처럼 인간을 본다. 때로는 젊어서 푸르고, 때로는 땅위에서 시든다.
그런데 다음 글을 이곳에서 읽고 좀 더 알게 되었다.
우리세대가 1800년전에 로마의 황제 마르쿠스 아우렐리우스에 관하여 알게 된 계기는 고등학교 국어교과서에 실렸던 페이터의 산문(散文)이라는 수필가 이양하 선생의 에세이에서 나왔음을 최근에 알게 되었다.

다음에 나올 인용(Quotes)은 그 황제의 명상록의 스토아 철학(Stoicism)으로부터 나왔다.

그는 말하기를, 언론의 자유를 용인하고 철학을 숭상할 것, 특히 우선 '바키우스'를 비롯하여 점차로 [여러 좋은 선생의 가르침을 받을 것] 등등 이었었다.
나 자신의 바로잡고 또한 수양을 할 필요가 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.
편지를 쓰되 "시누에사"라는 곳에서 어머니에게 써 보낸 것처럼 소박하게 쓸 것,
나를 모욕하고 또 무례한 짓을 하는 자들이 화해의 뜻을 표하면 곧 마음을 풀고 융화할 수 있는 기풍을 기를 것,
무릇 책은 정독하여 표면적인 이해에 만족하지 말 것,
말이 많은 사람들에 대하여는 경솔하게 맞장구를 치지 말 것
분노는 물론이고 어떠한 감정도 절대로 얼굴에 나타내지 않았다.
모든 감정에 벗어나 있으면서도, 애정이 매우 깊었었다.
그리고 철학에 대한 자기의 입장은 종시 일관하여 변함이 없어야 하며, 선한 일을 행하고, 기꺼이 남에게 베풀며, 선량한 희망을 품고, 친구들에게서 스스로 사랑을 받고 있음을 믿을 것도 배우게 되었다.
또한 다른 일에 미혹되지 않으며, 병들었거나 그밖에 모든 경우에 쾌활하고 상냥하며 어느 덕성이나 적당히 조절하여, 불평을 하지 않고, 자기 일을 처리하는 것을 배웠다.
언제나 인자스러운 행동을 하였고, 남을 용서하기를 주저하지 않았으며, 모든 허위에서 떠나 있었다.
남들이 명예롭게 생각하는 일에 허영을 구하지 않고, 노고와 정진을 사랑하고, 대중의 이익을 위해 건의하는 사람들의 말에 기꺼이 귀를 기울이고, 각자의 공과 과에 따라 상과 벌을 주어 일을 불공평하게 처리하지 않는 그 견실(堅實)성, 민활한 행동과 사면(赦免)에 있어서 경험이 풍부한 임기응변(臨機應變)의 지려(智慮)를 배웠다. 나는 아마도 이상적인 경지에 도달하지 못할 터이지만, 앞으로는 자연에 순응하여 사는 것을 아무도 방해하지 못할 것이다.
내가 어떠한 존재이건 간에, 단지 한 고깃덩이와 호흡과 지배적인 부분[정신]에 불과한 것이다.
그대의 책을 버리라. 이제 그대 자신을 현혹시키지 말라.
그대는 한 사람의 늙은이다. 더 이상 스스로를 노예로 삼지 말라.
현재의 처지에 불만을 품어도 안되고, 미래에서 물러나서도 안된다.
우주는 많은 원소(元素)의 여러 가지 변화에 의해 유지되는 동시에 많은 원소가 복합된 여러 가지 사물의 변화에 의하여 유지된다.
어떤 순간에도 한 로마인으로서, 그리고 인간으로서 원만하고 순박한 위엄을 지니는 동시에 사랑과 자유와 정의감을 갖고, 당면한 일을 처리하고, 다른 여러 가지 잡념에서 완전히 벗어날 수 있도록 충실히 사고해야 한다.
그대가 아는 바와 같이, 조용한 생활, 신들의 생활과 같은 삶을 보내기 위해 우리가 알아야 하는 것은 실로 근소한 것이다.
각자의 생명은 충족되어 있다. 그런데 그대의 영혼이 자기 자신을 존중하지 않고, 오히려 자기 행복을 남들의 영혼에 맡기고 있는 동안에 그대의 생명은 고갈된다. 즉 쾌락을 위하여 저지르는 비행은 고통으로 말미암아 저지른 비행보다 더욱 비난을 받아야 한다.
만물은 얼마나 신속히 소멸하는 것인가. 육신은 우주 속으로 사라지고, 그 기억은 시간 속으로 사라진다.
인간은 설령 삼천 년을 살든, 또는 일만 년의 몇 배를 살든, 그래도 역시 모든 인간이 잃는 생활은, 현재 그들이 영위하고 있는 생활이며, 또한 그 생활은 현재 그가 시시각각으로 잃고 있는 생명임을 기억할 필요가 있다. 이리하여 가장 긴 생애나 가장 짧은 생애가 동일하게 된다. [만년을 받고 만년을 잃거나 십년을 받고 십년을 잃거나 결과는 마찬가지다.]
인간의 생애는 하나의 점(點)으로, 물질은 유전(流轉) 속에 있고, 지각(知覺)은 우둔하고, 육체의 됨됨은 썩을 운명에 있으며 그리고 영혼은 선풍(旋風) 같고, 행운은 예측할 수 없으며, 명성은 비판이 결여되어 있다.
그리고 요컨대 육체에 속하는 것은 하나의 흐름이고, 심령에 속하는 것은 꿈결 같은 운무(雲霧)이며, 생활은 하나의 투쟁이고, 또한 나그네의 행로이며, 그리고 사후의 명예는 망각이다.[欲界: 욕계]

소크라테스는 페르디카스 궁정의 초대를 사절할 때 이렇게 말했다.
"나는 가장 나쁜 부덕(不德)으로 멸망되고 싶지 않습니다.즉 나는 내가 갚을 길이 없는 은혜는 받고 싶지 않습니다."

다음은 이양하 산문에서 발췌하였다.
“잎, 잎, 조그만 잎. 너의 어린애도, 너의 아유자(阿諛者)도, 너의 원수도, 너를 저주하여 지옥에 떨어뜨리려는 자나, 이 세상에 있어 너를 헐고 비웃는 자나, 또는 사후에 큰 이름을 남긴 자나, 모두가 다 한가지로 바람에 휘날리는 나뭇잎. 그들은 참으로 호머(Homer)가 말한 바와 같이 얼마 아니하여서는 바람에 불리어 흩어지고, 나무에는 다시 새로운 잎이 돋아나는 것이다. 그리고 이들에게 공통한 것이라고는 다만 그들의 목숨이 짧다는 것뿐이다.

과거와 미래는 너에게 어떠한 영향도 미치지 못한다. 오히려 현재만 영향력이 있다.
네가 기억해야 할것은 세가지가 전부다.
물질에 관해 말하자면, 너는 그 일부에 불과하다.
시간에 관해 말하자면, 너의 부분은 짧고 덧없는 순간에 지나지 않는다.
운명에 관해 말하자면, 네 역할은 사소하다.
불가능한 것을 원하는 것은 정신나간 짓이며, 나쁜 자들이 그렇게 하지 않는 것은 그것이 불가능한 일이기 때문이기에.
야망은 너의 행복과 다른 사람이 하는 말 또는 행동을 연관짓는 것이고, 무절제는 네 행복을 오로지 너 자신에게 일어나는 일과 연관짓는 것이다.
그러나 건전한 정신은 네 행복을 네 자신의 행동과 연관 짓는 것이다.
이웃이 하는 말이나 행동이나 생각에 관심을 기울이지 않는 사람은 얼마나 많은 시간을 절약할 수 있는가?
위대한 영혼이 어떤지, 어떻게 해야 하는지 떠들면서 시간을 낭비하지 말고, 스스로 위대한 영혼이 되어라.
미래 때문에 고민하지 말라. 미래와 마딱드려야 한다면 기필코 마딱드리게게 될 것이다. 지금 현재와 대결하며 들고 있는 이성이란 똑같은 무기를 들고서, 삶의 목표는 다수편에 서는 것이 아니라, 정신이상자 대열에서 빠져 나오는 것이다.
아름다움이란 아름다움 자체에서 비롯되며, 칭송은 전혀 그 일부가 되지 못한다. 따라서 칭송한다고 해서 더 나아지거나 더 못해지지는 않는다.

사람은 나뭇잎과도 흡사한 것
가을바람이 땅에 낡은 잎을 뿌리면
봄은 다시 새로운 잎으로 숲을 덮는다.

Author Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (Latin: [máːɾkus̠ auɾέːli.us̠ antɔ́ːni.us̠]; English: /ɔːˈriːliəs/ aw-REE-lee-əs; 26 April 121 – 17 March 180) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors (a term coined some 13 centuries later by Niccolò Machiavelli), and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161.
Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and his mother and grandfather raised him. After Hadrian's adoptive son, Aelius Caesar, died in 138, the emperor adopted Marcus's uncle Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and Lucius, the son of Aelius. Hadrian died that year, and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145.
After Antoninus died in 161, Marcus Aurelius acceded to the throne alongside his adoptive brother, who reigned under the name Lucius Verus. Under his rule the Roman Empire witnessed heavy military conflict. In the East, the Romans fought successfully with a revitalized Parthian Empire and the rebel Kingdom of Armenia. Marcus defeated the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatian Iazyges in the Marcomannic Wars; however, these and other Germanic peoples began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. He modified the silver purity of the Roman currency, the denarius. The persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire appears to have increased during his reign, but his involvement in this is unlikely, as early Christians living in the 2nd century never claimed him as a persecutor and Tertullian even called Marcus a "protector of Christians". The Antonine Plague broke out in 165 or 166 and devastated the population of the Roman Empire, causing the deaths of five to ten million people. Lucius Verus may have died from the plague in 169.
Unlike some of his predecessors, Marcus chose not to adopt an heir. His children included Lucilla, who married Lucius, and Commodus, whose succession after Marcus has been a subject of debate among both contemporary and modern historians. The Column and Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius still stand in Rome, where they were erected in celebration of his military victories. Meditations, the writings of "the philosopher" – as contemporary biographers called Marcus – are a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. These writings have been praised by fellow writers, philosophers, monarchs, and politicians centuries after his death.

이양하
이양하(李敭河, 1904년~1963년)는 대한민국의 영문학자이자 수필가이다.
평남 강서에서 출생하였으며, 1923년 평양고등보통학교 졸업하고 1927년 일본제삼고등학교(第三高等學校), 1930년 동경제국대학 영문과 졸업, 1931년 동 대학원 수료하였다. 1934년부터 연희전문학교 교수로 있으면서 논문과 수필을 발표하였다. 서울대 문리대 교수로 있다가 1950년 미국으로 건너가 하버드 대학 대학원에서 2년간 영문학을 연구하였다. 1953년 미국 학술원의 초청으로 예일 대학 언어학부에서 마틴 교수와 함께 《한영사전》을 편찬했다. 서울대학교 문리과대학장을 지냈으며, 1954년 학술원 회원이 되었다. 저서로 《이양하 수필집》 등이 있다.
피천득(皮千得) 등과 함께 램(Lamb, C.) · 베이컨(Bacon, F.) 등 정통적 유럽식 수필을 도입, 본격적으로 에세이를 발표하였다. 그의 수필은 종래의 신변잡기적 · 주관적 제재에서 벗어나 생활인의 철학과 사색이 담긴 본격 수필을 시도하였으며, 〈나무〉(1964) 등의 작품은 그의 수필문학사상 주요한 평가를 내리고 있다.
또한 영문학자로서 리처즈(Richards, I.A.)의 《시와 과학》(1947)을 번역하여 이 땅에 리처즈의 문학이론을 최초로 소개하는 한편, 권중휘(權重輝)와 함께 《포켓영한사전》(1954)을 펴내어 영미어문학 보급에 기여하였다.

A person’s lifetime is a moment, his existence a flowing stream, his perception dull, the entire fabric of his body readily subject to decay, his soul an aimless wanderer, his fortune erratic, hhis fame uncertain. In short; the body is nothing but a river, the soul is dream and delusion/ life is war and sojourn in a strane land; and oblivion is all there is to posthumous fame. What, then, can escort us safely on our way? Only one thing; philosophy.

2. Notebook 3 [8]
In the mind of someone who’s been chastened and purified you’ll find no suppuration, nothing putrid or festering. Nor does the day of his death catch him with his life incomplete, so that you might say that the actor is leaving the stage L the drama is over, before it’s run its course. You’ll also find no trace of slavishness ore affectation, neither dependency nor disengagement, nothing suspicious and nothing lurking unseen.

3. Notebook 3 [10]
Throw everything away and retain only these few truths, Remember also that each of us lives only in the fleeting present moment, and that all the rest of our lives has either already been lived or is undisclosed. Each person’s life is but a small thing, and small is the little corner of the earth where he lives. Small too is even the longest-lasting posthumous fame, and is depends on a sequence of little men who will die very soon, and who aren’t aware even of themselves, let alone someone who died long ago.

How much freedom is gained if a man ignores what his neighbor said or did or intended and considers only what he himself is doing to make his actions just and right, the kinds of things a good man would do! Don’t let your attention be caught by the darkness of others’ humors; just run straight on the line; with no ungainly movements.

Time is the river of events and its current is strong: no sooner does something heave into view than it’s swept away and something else is being carried past instead, only to be swept away.

6. Notebook 4 [45]
What comes next is always related by affinity to what went before [인과, cause and effect]. It’s not a matter of mere enumeration of discrete units in a mechanically inevitable sequence, but of a rational connection. Just as existing things are arrayed in harmonious relation to one another, so things in the process of coming into existence don’t exhibit mere succession but a wonderful affinity.
