The Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall of Remembrance

On July 27, 2022, the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall will have a new focal point —

a remembrance wall featuring the names of more than 36,000 Americans who died supporting the War

and over 7,100 Koreans who died while augmenting the Army. Their names will be organized by rank

and respective branch of service, demonstrating how the War’s burden fell unevenly across the military.

*On July 27, 1953, Armistice was signed by U.N. represented by the U.S., China, and NK.

Most of the American soldiers were 18 to 20-year-old high school graduates who did not know

why they were sent to Korea. Since world war II was over in 1945, the U.S. military was under

peacetime policy. They were not trained adequately to engage in a battle. They were not even

supplied with the required weapons needed to carry out their given duties. Most of the time

they played sports. Congress told generals to let soldiers relax because it is peacetime.

The U.S. was booming. GDP of the U.S. was 70% of the world. These kids were living like princes

of a kingdom. It was a cultural shock for them when they arrived in Korea which was the poorest

country in the world. When they were told to attack the enemy, they went backward. They

did not know how to protect even their own lives. Many young men who have many years

of happy lives ahead died helplessly. As the war went on, they became brave soldiers.

I hear that the Korean government spent 17 million dollars to build the wall. I think there is no

way to thank enough the young men who fought and died in the Korean war. It is a very small

token for their sacrifice. Many veterans who are still living must feel proud to see

the prosperity of South Korea now.
