Friends, It's been a month already. Nevertheless, I feel like I'm obligated to notify this to our alumni members. Hate to inform you of the very disturbing news that our beloved friend, Kim Jaewook ('69), passed away unexpectedly on 6/10/12 (Sun). In the midst of the overwhelming grief, friends and relatives gethered together to celebrate his life on his memorial service day, 6/24/12 (Sun), at his Oakland, CA residence. He was a devoted family man, a leader in the medical school, a dedicated physician and a mountain lover. He traveled odd places in the world from Himalayas to Timbuktu. He did all that. He lived a full and glorious life. His thoughts were always deep and touching. His words led our way to dignity. We had many fond memories together. We shared common interest in our lives. As terrible as it is, he has been suffering from a rare neurological disorder called Multisystem Atrophy (MSA) for a few years with rapid exacerbation. Just remembered part of the song lyrics, Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), written for Vincent van Gogh: But still your love was true. And when no hope was left in sight On that starry, starry, night, You took your life, as lovers often do. But I could have told you, Vincent (Jaewook), This world was never meant for one As beautiful as you.

I am glad you're here, Dr. Ahnn - remembering our dear friend, Kim Jaewook.
And glad you fill me up the part of Jaewook's life which I didn't know.
I didn't know what to do when I heard the sad news from Dr. Uhm Kyu-dong.
Not only I couldn't attend his funeral, nor could I call Mrs. Kim, because
I didn't know what to say to her. I simply sent a sympathy card, instead.
I remembered his son, David, Plastic Surgeon, and his daughter, Beth, Teacher.
I hope they are all alright. Now, one month passed, I might be able to call
Mrs. Kim and share Jae-wook's lifestory - His Legacy.
What a loss.

Dr. Ahnn,
The other day when I met our hospital's Senior Vice President
of Medical Affairs, I asked him "How's going?". I meant our
hospital's financial situation. He answered "Better than others
at least". And he followed, saying "Life is a Trip, and...die".
Since then his words are lingering around my ears.
"Life is a Trip, and...die"
That's true, but I would add "Legacy" remains at least in our
memory.

At last, I called Mrs. Kim Jae-Wook after much hesitation.
I heard a little bit of last days of our frinend.
But I am relieved I could call her to see how she's been
doing after the tragedy. I am really relieved after I called.
What is a friend for?
Thank you Dr. Ahnn for your remembrance of Dr. Jaewook Kim.
김재욱 동문님의 명복을 빕니다.
