Winter is here... Hummingbirds, are they gone ? We had a few snow flurries off and on since last week. We have a lot of snow on the high mountains already. Yesterday, they opened one of the skiing slopes for the first time this year.
Today we had first significant accumulation of snow on the grouund. I set the feeder out with new supply of sugar water last week but it is only half-empty this time. The first time this year, it wasn't finished. Most of our hummingbirds here start to move down to south on or near the autumn equinox (September 21, 2009).
We had a few still left coming to the feeder until about a few days ago. The first frost of the season came about 3 days ago. Then I have not seen them since. The last of the few young birds must have gone as well now. They must have followed the call of the nature.
As usual, except for the territorial fighting near the feeder, it was a good summer time for them. There were a few new baby hummingbirds during the summer and they grew as big as their mother. Bon Voyage !!
Wishing them a good winter down in Mexico somewhere.
Summertime and the livin' is easy fish are jumpin and the cotton is high oh your daddy's rich and your ma is good lookin' so hush little baby don't you cry

I'd rather hummning "Summertime", looking back past summer.
It was memorable summer. Really, it was.
