장안사(이은상 시, 홍난파 곡)
A long time ago, when I was getting married in Pennsylvania, two girls came from NYC
to sing a 축가 for my wedding ceremony. I loved the song but didn't know the name of the song
until lately. It turned out to be the above "장안사". I still do not know why they sang this song.
By looking and comparing the 오층탑, in the video, and on the webpage by Dr. KH Chung,
the temple are exactly the same one. So, here it is.
I was looking for two poems but I could not find them anywhere on the webpage.
What the hell...?? Then I found two three-line Korean poems above each picture.
When Dr. Chung shows poems on a webpage, I am automatically looking for Chinese poems.
And there were no Chinese poems on this webpage.
Being a bit smarter than Trump, I soon realized my mistake and I found them.
One more thing... Some people insist that "한글" was not widely popularized during the Lee Dynasty.
The way I knew, that's not true at all. It may not have been popularized during the "세종" period
but it was very much popularized among the common persons afterward. They really enjoyed "한글",
or "언문". See all these 한글 books that are being passed down to us to this day.
Unfortunately, "한글" started to disappear from the commoner's usage as it had become horribly
difficult to write due to the idiotic "철자법" made by the equally moronic "국문학자"
during the early ROK period.
The easy '한글" was transformed into a spelling-bound, non-"표음문자". Even most of
the "대학교수" was not able to write their manuscripts in their own 한글 without making
serious mistakes.
Therefore, every publishing companies in South Korea hired professional 한글 spell-checkers
(Can you believe that??) to correct all the manuscripts according to the "철자법".
I happened to be one of the 한글 spell-checkers in 동아출판사.
I hated 한글 for that, but it got me through medical school.
Should I laugh or cry for the "한글"??
There are still a bunch of Koreans who insist that there are no spellings in 한글. LOL!!
They do not know that "한글" is no longer "표음문자".
How many of you can write Korean without making spelling errors?
How many of you insist that there is no spelling in 한글??
I know even the "국문학과 출신" classmates make mistakes in our high school websites.
How do I know? I happened to be the webmaster of the website.
Unfortunately, 한글 has been disappearing from regular common people.
They can "read" but they can not "write". What a tragedy is this?

Oops, oops, I have to eat my words, KwanHo, but my memory on the source/background of two poems I added as above must be wrong!!!! According to my wife, I apparently mixed up with her other poems in 금강산 기행가 to be sure. What an ignorance I am embarrassed to admit but I made such shameful mistake to be blamed as a bad son as my wife forces me to admit.

조애영 시인 님의 두 詩 (above) were written during the ROK era.
(because they seem to follow철자법.)
or it might have been written a long time ago and then "re-written" later according to the "철자법".
In Korea, the rule used to be that you can not publish 한글 if you do not follow the rule of 철자법.
I do not know how it is now. It's none of my business anymore.
I try to correct all English writings on our website into correct grammar and spellings.
(as much or all as I can)
But I do not touch 한글 writings because I no longer approve or follow the Korean 철자법
because I am no longer in the medical school and have to pay tuition to SNU.

You, two folks, don't be embarrassed with your mix-ups or too discouraged at your inability to write 한글 with an acceptable command of 철자법 since it's common happenings in our age groups.
About your gripe at 한글철자법, I had a horrible time reading my father's short message to my mother written in 1923 in a postcard.
My third sister 18 years my senior tried to read it during her visit to my house at Pittsford, NY years ago, and couldn't finish reading. However, I was determined to read it and posted it on the webpage.

Dr. Chung, the reason you could not read your father's writing was that your father used
"표음문자 한글". However, you never learned true "표음문자 한글".
You had been profoundly brain-washed into the "철자법 한글" that is non-표음문자 한글.
But your mother should have had no trouble in reading your father's writing because she was
in the generation of "표음문자 한글". Linguistically, you are in a different generation.
Another reason you could not read might have been that your father used 古語 한글
and you did not have the vocabulary in that system.
See... here, you can see that "how radically" they change the 한글 by developing 철자법.
They ruined 한글. It's no longer the "easy" 한글 it used to be before.
Funny thing:
Dr. Chung quoted the link to the "한국어 마춤법/문법 검사기".
If you see the link, you see "URL: http://speller.cs.pusan.ac.kr/".
Now, you see the word "speller" in it, meaning that 한글 needs "speller"!!
They are admitting that there is the spelling in Korean (한글).
Now, please do not say that there's no spelling in Korean. ㅎ, ㅎ, ㅎ.

I believe Korean 철자법 has been changed/updated(?) many times, Steve since 조선어학회 initiated and I recall there were so many jokes to tease such stupid rules/철자법 they imposed. But, thank goodness, from that point of view, Korean 시조 has maintained/succeeded the unique role of 내방가사 to preserve 한글 as "표음문자" as 노산 이은상 narrated through his 서문 for the 내방가사집 my mother published with two of her proteges.
As a near-illiterate to Korean literature, I have no way to know or understand the genuine value of this 내방가사 more than the historical value, as they praised, but my mother devoted her later life to dig out many hidden/forgotten stories which have been passed down through women folks as so-called 규방가사 especially at 경상도 양반집 till she passed away, all alone!
When she was passed away in early 2000, quite a few friends/colleagues of her came to the funeral and left a few books/booklets they published with her helps, which I brought home to the States as the memorabilia/souvenir(?) of my mother. And even after she passed away, two more books she couldn't finish were completed by her protege, I also heard.

P.S. I heard from one of her aunts that my mother apparently surprised her grandfather to master(?) Chinese alphabets/천자문 while she was on his lap, 3 years old? watching others learn so that her father waved the rule to allow my mother to join her brothers to study like her male siblings despite she was a female. So she studied classic literature/한문 at home fully before she was allowed to go up to Seoul to receive NEW education to have become one of three 신여성 among 경상도 양반집 규수 then. So, she determined to collect many stories known among the female folks before they all get lost.

Upon my further search of” 장안사 이은상 시 홍난파 작곡” I stumbled upon the following unexpected historical and literary treasures:
In short, 장안사 wasn’t what I described in the webpage, but a very, very famous temple in 금강산, which BB’s mother dear visited as a “배화고녀 생도” during her school trip to 금강산.
To WM, the two girls from NYC sang the song which had to be the very "가곡 장안사" composed by 이은상 and 홍난파.
Though quite long and detailed, I extracted the whole story of 장안사, our historical treasure, please read the whole document.

북한 강원도 회양군 금강산(金剛山) 장경봉(長慶峯)에 있었던 삼국시대 고구려의 승려 혜령이 창건한 사찰.
내용
신라 법흥왕 때 창건되었다는 설과, 551년(양원왕 7) 고구려의 승려 혜량(惠亮)이 신라에 귀화하면서 왕명으로 창건하였다는 설이 있다. 이 때 비로전을 짓고 비로자나 철불(鐵佛)을 봉안했으며, 대장경을 절에 보관했고 오층탑을 세웠다고 한다.
그 뒤 773년(혜공왕 9) 진표율사(眞表律師)가 중수하였고, 946년(정종 1)에 왕의 태후 신명왕후(神明王后)와 황보왕후(皇甫王后)가 각각 『금강경』과 『법화경』을 금니로 사경(寫經)해서 비로전에 봉안하였다. 970년(광종 21) 화재로 불타 버린 뒤 12년간 폐허로 남아 있다가, 982년(성종 2) 선사 회정(懷正)이 함열현 등에서 토지 1,050결(結)을 보시받아 중건하였다.
1343년(충혜왕 복위 4)원나라 순제(順帝)의 왕후 기씨(奇氏)는 고려인으로서, 황제와 태자를 위해 금 1,000정(錠)과 공인들을 보내서 굉변(宏卞)의 감독 아래 퇴락한 당우를 중건하고 새로운 누각을 건립하게 했는데, 지극한 정성과 뛰어난 솜씨는 금강산뿐만 아니라 전국에서도 그 유례를 찾기 힘든 작품이었다고 한다.
1392년(공양왕 4)에는 홍예교(虹霓橋)와 절의 사적비가 큰 비로 무너졌다. 1459년(세조 5) 세조가 행차하여 대웅전을 중수하게 하고 토지를 하사하였다. 그러나 1477년(성종 8) 화재로 전소됨에 따라 1483년 나라에서 금 3,000관과 백미 500석을 받아 일청(一淸)이 중건하였다.
1537년(중종 32) 다시 불타 버리자 1545년(인종 1) 일청이 다시 중건하였다. 그 뒤 1708년(숙종 34) 귀옥(歸玉)이 무게 3,000근의 대종을 조성하였다. 1728년(영조 4) 묘현(玅玄)이 중창하였고, 1791년(정조 15) 순상(巡相) 윤사국(尹師國)이 전(錢) 5,000관을 내어 중수하였다.
1842년(헌종 8) 부원군 조만영(趙萬永)이 금 2,500관을 보시하여 새로 300여 칸을 증축하고, 밭 40여 석을 시주하였다. 1863년(철종 14) 호조판서 김병기(金炳冀)가 주상하여 공명첩(空名帖) 500장을 내리게 하고, 자신의 재산 중 1,200냥을 보시하여 중수하게 하였다.
김병기는 1864년에도 3,000냥을 시주해서 불상·불화들을 보수하거나 새로 봉안하였다. 이 절은 입구에서부터 일주문(一柱門)·운성문(雲性門)을 거쳐 만천교(萬川橋)라는 징검다리를 건너면, 숲 사이로 만수정(萬水亭)이 있고 그 안에는 ‘금강산장안사’라는 현판이 걸려 있다.
그 안의 오른쪽으로는 대향각(大香閣), 왼쪽으로는 극락전, 정면으로 마주 보이는 곳에는 본전인 대웅전이 있다. 1945년 이전까지는 6전(殿)·7각(閣)·1문(門)을 가졌으나 그 규모는 옛날에 비해 축소된 것이고, 부속 암자로 장경암(長慶庵)·안양암(安養庵)·지장암(地藏庵)·영원암(靈源庵) 등을 가진 금강산 4대 사찰 중의 하나였다.
문화재로는 기황후가 중창할 때 비로자나불을 비롯하여 53불, 1만 5000불 등이 봉안되었다고 하나 지금은 전하지 않는다. 다만, 대법당 왼쪽의 지성전(至聖展)에 봉안된 나한상은 비범한 조각수법을 보이고 있다. 그러나 이것도 기황후 당시의 것인지 그 후대의 것인지는 단정 짓기 곤란하다.
부속 암자 중 안양암은 장안사 동북쪽 3㎞ 지점에 있는데 고려 성종 때 회정이 창건한 곳이며, 이후 회도(懷道)가 이곳에서 수도하였다. 이 암자에는 미륵불과 나한상 등이 봉안되어 있다. 또한, 영원암은 신라 때 영원조사(靈源祖師)가 창건한 것으로 금강산 일원에서도 가장 맑고 고요한 수도처로 이름 높은 곳이다.
부근의 옥초대(沃焦臺)는 영원조사가 일심으로 수도하던 곳이라는 전설이 있고, 그 앞의 반듯한 돌은 영원조사가 공부하던 곳이라고 하여 책상바위라고 이름 붙여졌다.

이 곡 역시 1933년 "조선가요 작품집"을 통해서 발표되었다.
난파는 사찰을 에워싼 풍치가 마음에 들었는지, 부처님께 귀의하겠다는 생각에서 였는지
알 수 없으나 고뇌 많은 인생을 회오하려는 심정에서 이러한 "사찰" 관련 시를 택해 곡을 만들었던 것만은 사실일 것 같다.
장안사의 흥망성쇠의 덧없음을 읊은 이 시에 삼부연음의 아름다운 분산화음에 실려 흘러 내려간다.
동일한 장단이 반복되는 한국 전통음악의 선율전개기법과 서양의 형식미가 결합된 곡이다.
서정적 분위기의 곡으로 오랫동안 중학교 음악교과서에 수록되어 친숙한 곡이며,
한국 초기 가곡의 정형으로 난파의 곡중에 가장 널리 애창되는 곡 중에 하나이다.

So my memory based on what I heard from my mother's friend/이철경 might be right, as I quoted as above! Indeed, she might have written these two poems while she went to the school /배화여고 excursion to 금강산 and also the principal 이만규? 교장- father of nationally renowned caligrapher 이철경 who was my mother's classmate -picked the first one/poem to send to one literature journal? and published. Until I read her 금강산 기행가, I really can't tell but 장안사 she wrote about was indeed at 금강산 after all.

P.S. I honestly never knew 시조(時調) has such a structure of 삼구(三句): 기(起)-승(承) -반전(反轉) till you mentioned and now I know why many scholars acknowledge 시조 as our own '독특한 창작품' with the value of 무형문화재. A bit embarrassed to confess despite my mother is recognized as 시조시인! Anyhow, she dedicated much time for her nephew 조지훈 to set up his 기념관 at his birthplace/영양 주실 and her family quarter is now designated as 문화재.
