KwanHo, believe or not, you changed my perception on Chinese music. After I read your perfect translation of old Chinese poem, I watched the video you kindly added to show the poem written in different calligraphies with background music- 비파? -, and enjoyed for the first time such sad Chinese melodies played with Chinese instruments - indeed, I disliked Chinese melodies especially sung by female with such artificially squeezed voice though I tried hard to enjoy many times through Chinese Traditonal Opera but failed hopelessly till now.
I thank you again for such extensive works to translate Chinese poems to help us to enjoy together. I often fail to read this unique SNUMA website regularly while I am in abroad- I still make transcontinental travels every other month in addition to domestic travels to deliver the lectures, etc- and I almost missed this poem. But I enjoy it whole morning- today is Columbus Day, Federal Holiday, so that we closed the office as well!-, appreciating to your efforts so much. If you should have separate records of all these pearls, I wish you to share with me if you would!!!!
Indeed, I have a special affinity(?) and interests in Chinese history since my elementary school days like many other friends- I recall I started to read 삼국지 right after I got in the middle school like other kids, while in DaeGu during Korean War. And I always spared the first week of summer vacation to read through, initially three but expanded to six? volumes of 삼국지, day and night, almost like a ritual to signal the beginning of summer vacation till through the last year of the high school- so that I spent more time to read Chinese history throughout our school days than others and still I do have much interests. So fascinated and so overwhelmed to 삼국지 in particular so that 삼국지 has remained the main pillar to my Chinese history.
As a matter of fact, my mentor, Mel Williams, the founder of combined program of transplant-vascular surgery program at the Johns Hopkins, was born at Suzhou, beautiful water town/village next to Hangzhou you all know well, as a son of American missionary- they were kicked out during WWII - so that Mel had a special affinity to China and led us to help Chinese colleagues through decades till he retired.
So, whenever Mel asked me to accompany with him to visit China, I didn’t refuse and even took the Yangtze River cruise from Chongqing to Wuhan with him and his wife before Three Gorges Dam put all these historical places under the water. Hence, I had a unique chance to explore many historical places/villages along Yangtze River and learned more about story involved to 삼국지 to become simply fascinated with how these three kingdoms ended with such sadness to 촉/제갈량, after all.
If the person like me with very limited knowledge to Chinese history were so fascinated, you as THE expert of Chinese poem/history will be more fascinated with so much more stories you would know. So, I wonder whether you could organize the story based on so many poems/events they left along 삼국지, especially on 촉/제갈량 so that we could enjoy more in depth!
Warm regards,
BB
P.S. When I was invited to Zhengzhou, 2010, to give an Oration for Prof. Wang ZhongGao, the founder/pioneer of Chinese vascular surgery, to celebrate his official retirement, I knew nothing about Zhengzhou except it is a capital city of Henan Province (河南: south of the Yellow River). But soon after I arrived, I was fascinated to confirm Zhengzhou is the place known as Zhongyuan (中原), we read so many times through 삼국지. So, I spared extra time to explore the area, known as the cradle of Chinese civilization and once considered the “Center of the World”, including Luoyang (洛陽) we all so familiar with the story of 유비, 관운장, 장비. Indeed, whenever I visit to China- sometimes twice a year! - I always try to spare a few extra days to explore such historical places nearby with so rich histories we read. Indeed, more you learn more fascinated with such overwhelming stories, only wishing to have some knowledge in the poems to enjoy more.
