Sung Hyun Park doesn’t show much emotion. But Sunday the Korean showed the world the wide range of emotions she has been experiencing, much like the roller coaster she's been riding this season.
The sixth ranked player in the world outlasted a three-person playoff, defeating So Yeon Ryu and Nasa Hataoka on the second extra hole to win her second major title and fourth career victory on the LPGA Tour.
Park rolled in birdie putts on both playoff holes, the second one dropping in at the par 4, 16th hole after a 20-minute weather delay. As she hugged her caddie, David Jones, Park showed an outpouring of emotion that hasn’t been seen in her previous wins. She cried openly on her caddie’s shoulder as all the frustrations of three missed cuts in her last four starts poured out.
Park recorded the only bogey-free round on Sunday at Kemper Lakes Golf Club, carding a 3-under par, 69 to force a playoff. She didn’t make a single bogey on the back nine all week. When she rolled in a long birdie putt at the par 4, 14th hole to pull within one of Ryu, she let her fist fly.
It was the most emotion she had displayed all week. Park fist pumped again at the par 4, 16th hole after chopping her ball out of knee high grass in order to make, what would end up being, a critical up and down from near the water just short of the green. It was the highlight of the championship and evoked memories of another great Korean, Se Ri Pak, who 20-years-ago hit a shot barefoot from a similar lie and inspired a nation.
Park’s par save seemed omniscient, as Ryu found the water off the tee at the par 3, 17th hole and made double-bogey to drop back into a tie with Park. At the 72nd hole Park let a birdie putt slide by that would have given her the outright win.
Park is just the third Korean to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, joining a short list that includes two of the game’s greats in Pak and Inbee Park. The win is Park’s second of the season. She won the weather-shortened Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic in May.

What the major Championships of LPGA thus far this season are!
Three Majors so far were all ended up playoffs and Korean
players, Inbee Park in ANA and Hyojoo Kim in US Open were
involved. Both players were losing ends unfortunately.
However,
Sung Hyun Park at this time was the winner of KPMG Women's
PGA Championship outlasting fellow Korean player, So Yeon
Ryu at 2nd playoff hole.
Par saving up and down from deep rough at the 16th hole of Sung
Hyun Park combining with a double bogey at 17th hole by So Yeon
Ryu made the three-way tie between Ryu, Park, and Hataoka.
Hataoka was eliminated at 1st playoff hole and Park's birdie
putt at 2nd playoff hole was the winner over So Yeon Ryu.
This win was Park's 4th LPGA win including 2 Majors in 2 years
and 2nd win this year(Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic).
Let us give big hands to the Major winner, Sung Hyun Park! KJ

I felt sorry for So Yeon Ryu as well.
This win would make her Rolex World Ranking No 1
and one step closer to coveted career Grand Slam!
The wind was the main culprit to put her ball in the water hazard
at the 17th hole, but big helper to put the ball barely on
the green at 1st playoff hole for So Yeon.
I was impressed again for Sung Hyun Park's aggressiveness
and no wonder her nickname is '닥공(닥치고 공격)! KJ

Lately, we have been talking a lot about the politics in Korea as well as in America.
Generally, we get to a conclusion that the politics are dirty and dishonest.
However, contrary to the politics, the professional golf seems to be the fairest, cleanest,
and the most honest thing that we, the human beings, play.
Even though it is an anxiety-ridden, unpredictable, hardest, and most frustrating game
but we still love it because it's always a clean and honest game.
Why don't we learn from it?
(I am talking about PGA, LPGA games, not the personal games that non-pros are playing.)

Sportsmanship and Politicians don't go well together for sure.
But next time,
If we have any chance to elect any Political Leader in Korea or in America,
Let's look at their past career - whether they took part in Group Sports or Not.
I'll move this article to my HS Webpage's 'Golf Section'
with Highlights of The Final Round.

What a heart-breaking and beautiful picture !! (The third picture above from here).
Despite a deep disappointment and despair, So-Yeon Ryu extends her arm to her enemy, SH Park, for a congratulatory embrace at the end of the final play. The sadness shows in So-Yeon's face.
In the meantime, there was an apologetic hesitation and awkwardness at the side of Sung-Hyun Park
to accept So-Hyun's arms.
The crossing of emotions between two Korean players is fateful but truly beautiful.
What can they do? There can be only one winner.
Good thing that it was between the two friends from the same country.
I guess this feeling can be felt only by the golfers who were following this duo's struggle to the end.
For So-Yeon, I am hoping, soon or later, your time will surely come.
Keep on working. There is a tomorrow and you are still young.

It was indeed a special treat, a luxury, by these two great players,
two great human beings, the best two players in the world according to
one of the two TV commentators, for us Koreans to enjoy the game
in a most relaxed manner without the need to root for either one of the two.
Thank you, So-Yeon, the best putter, and Sung Hyun, the longest hitter.
2018.07.02 09:32
As we all knew that these two players were co-players of the year
last year and both of them are considered becoming superstars in
the near future.
Even though both of them have won already this year, they are coming
in this tournament in quite contrast.
So Hyun has been hot with mutiple rounds of 60s in a row, however
Sung Hyun has missed cut 5 times already this year, but Sung Hyun
was the winner instead of So Yeon! It was such a irony!
Nasa Hataoka is a rising Japanese star and she has been unstoppable
for last couple of weeks. I am glad our girls eliminating her at 1st
playoff hole to let us watching comfortably rest of playoff. KJ
2018.07.02 23:43
I loved what happened in the first playoff hole where two Koreans made birdies
to eliminate the Japanese player. Sorry to have said that.
Maybe we are having too much fun. But I am sure Hataoka didn't like what happened.
This young freshman golfer can wait for a few years for her days.
2018.07.04 13:20
Nasa Hataoka(19) was considered next superstar in Japan,
when she won Major as a amateur in JLPGA and she entered
LPGA in 2017 with great expectation.
However
She did not adjust LPGA well in her Rookie year(2017)
and as a matter of fact, she lost her pass for next season
due to poor result in 2017.
She went to Q-school and entered again LPGA this year and
she began to play like she supposed to do and she won
Walmart Arkansas Championship quite convincingly 2 weeks
ago.Evethough her 2nd win in 2 weeks was blocked by 태극낭자,
I think she would do well for rest of the season. KJ

I watched it to the end. A very interesting match at the end.
I felt really sorry for Ryu who lost two-shot lead suddenly by dunking the ball into the lake.
I think she got a bit uptight at the end and her swing did not follow the target well even in the 18th hole.
It was a good relief when the Korean Duo got rid of Japanese player in the first hole of the playoff.
After that, I didn't worry about anything.
S.H. Park was my favorite player as I followed her a few times in the past LPGA.
