No, I don't laugh at all.
I just admire you for such a good command of current Chinese.
During my trip to the Western China, I tried to communicate with front desk girls using written Chinese, but it's quite difficult.
I attempted it since I wish to have my personal trip alone to China.
I don't know if my future travel of this kind will be successful.
Do I still live in my dream?
Thanks for your encouragement.

Going way way back, during our middle school days, we had 漢文時間, once or twice a week,
given by very old "grandpa" teacher. He was in really old style in everyway.
We learned classic Chinese literature (probably 논어, 맹자...).
It was not "conversational or modern Chinese",
so if we wanted to write Chinese letters to communicate with Chinese,
it didn't help very much at all, just like your difficulties with hotel receptionists.
(So, was the English lessons in those days. It was 100% grammar !!
It didn't do much good when we landed in America.)
Another stupid thing in Chinese education in Korea was that they taught Chinese letters in Korean pronunciation.
So, even though we know considerable amount of Chinese letters, it's no good to speak in China.
We had wasted enormous amount of our precious time and effort to learn something that wasn't useful for daily life.
In those younger days, our brains were like a sponge (just like those of our grandchildren).
If given the right thing to learn, it could have absorbed enormous amount of useful knowledge.
Instead, our brain were fed with all these garbages of grammar, literature works, and philosophical subjects.
Though they were "noble, highly civilized, and cultivated" things but they didn't do much good in real life.
Anyway, we had paid our due (by wasting our time for something unnecessary) but learned the basic building blocks.
So, we should take advantage of them.
During high school days, one of my friends brought a book of "Chinese conversation."
It started with 早餐라嗎? (츠반라마, did you have breakfast?). I still remember.
Anyway, looking through Chinese conversation manuals, we can learn a lot of things that we missed.

Dear Web Manager:
You offered me an area deep and wide to be discussed.
The traditional Chinese education to our forefathers for thousands of years was limited
to reading and writing of classical Chinese.
It was to study and write Chinese privately, officially or diplomatically between Korean and Chinese officials.
There was no such thing as speaking or hearing Chinese spoken language
since there were no active communications among Koreans and Chinese.
But time has changed, and now globalization dominates the whole world.
Nowadays there is a recurrent move for resumption of Chinese study, primarily Chinese characters
from Chinese classics since Korean characters excluding Chinese characters are not enough.
That means the traditional teaching of Chinese characters, then what about the current Chinese language?
We must hear, speak and understand current Chinese languages.
Does it mean that we need two separate courses for Chinese study?
Firstly, traditional study in the Korean Chinese way, and secondly, contemporary study
for current Chinese spoken language, which are to be combined.
What a confusion could it be to have two sets of Chinese to be learned?
These two sets of Chinese characters have two different pronunciations,
one Korean-Chinese style, the other contemporary Chinese style, the former from our age-long tradition,
the other from current Chinese language.
There must be satisfactory and comprehensive integration of these two sets of Chinese study in Korea.
I can tell you that it will be far more complex than our English study with reading class
and conversation class since at least both classes use the same pronunciation.
I don’t see any easy solution with future Chinese education.
However it must be dealt cautiously but decisively since China has been and will be our closest neighbor forever.
