People report increase of bald eagles along the riverfront Jack McPhail describes his home on the St. Clair River as a “room with a view.” But even McPhail was surprised by the view outside his Port Huron window Sunday.“I have never seen an eagle in real life except for yesterday,” McPhail said. A few miles down the river in Marysville, Helayne Bright expressed the same surprise.“I’ve never seen a bald eagle here,” she said. “I think it’s awesome.”Up and down the St. Clair River, people are reporting bald eagle sightings. Bright said, at one time four bald eagles were perched in a tree behind her River Road home.“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Bright said as she watched the birds from her back door Monday afternoon. “They’ve been here a good three hours or better.”Jonathan Lutz, executive director for Michigan Audubon, said bald eagle sightings aren’t as unusual as they once were.“It really speaks to their conservation success story,” Lutz said. The bald eagle was taken off the state’s endangered species list in 2009, said Karen Cleveland, all-bird specialist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Bald and golden eagles still are protected under the Federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.Cleveland said the harsh winter likely has caused the eagles to congregate along the river, looking for open water and waterfowl or fish gathering at the open water. “It’s relatively normal to see bald eagles congregating where there’s good access to food,” Cleveland said.McPhail said several ducks are camped in front of his home near the Seaway Terminal. He believes their presence is what brought the eagle to his home Sunday.“An eagle was sitting in the tree,” McPhail said. “He tried to get one of those ducks.”Cleveland said the eagles likely are from northern Michigan, although Cleveland knows of some nests on Saginaw Bay and in the Thumb. She said there are more than 700 eagle nests in Michigan.“Our bald eagles are what we like to call ‘short distance migrants,’” Cleveland said. “They fly only as far south as they need to for food or shelter.”Cleveland said if the winter continues to worsen, the eagles likely will fly to Ohio next. She said bald eagles are unlikely to target dogs or cats if a human is nearby. Cleveland suggested keeping small animals close by or on a leash if there is a bald eagle in the area.Cleveland said people who encounter a wounded eagle should contact the DNR.McPhail said he likes the companionship the bald eagle and ducks have added to his “room with a view” Sunday.“I’m just having the time of my life watching Mother Nature at work,” he said. |

Dr. Hwang;
Please don't get too relaxed about the bald eagles nearby your home.
They can still be the snooping agents of Obama on you,
one of the last Republicans in Detroit area.
Undoubtedly, the conservation program for bald eagles had been very successful.
I had seen tons of them in Alaskan coast.
The unusual cold weather and over-population at home must have brought them down to south.
Maybe, I should keep my eyes open for them in Colorado.
(Obama doesn't need to send a snooper on me though.)
If I see one of them in my neighborhood, I will be as much excited as you are.

WM!
You never know! Do you remember that your beloved president
had snooped around even Allies' Heads of Nations?,ㅎ,ㅎ.
They said the population of bald eagle has been steadily down
and they are around 100,000 and 40-50% of them are in Alaska.
We had seen plenty of them during our last Alaskan trip as well. KJ

(윗 첫번째 사진)의 차이점은 yellow beak in golden eagle vs blackish
yellow beak in bald eagle.
Continental congress
에서 National symbol로 정한후 National bird and animal로 되었고 그때부터
